The Wanted left chasing Fun. as US band top the Official Singles Chart
It was all supposed to be about Chasing The Sun this week for UK boyband The Wanted, but a shock turn of events since Wednesday’s Official Chart Update has left The Wanted chasing US band Fun..
Back on home turf after jet-setting across America to make their mark on the other side of the pond, The Wanted took an early lead this week with new single Chasing The Sun, and it looked like the popular emo-friendly indie anthem We Are Young by Fun. FT Janelle Monae wasn’t ever going to make it to the top spot. However, as of today’s final whistle, the indie rockers have managed to steam past the UK boyband by more than 3,000 copies to clinch their moment in the Official Singles Chart spotlight, once and for all.
We Are Young has spent a total of seven weeks on the Official Chart, shifting 431,000 copies to date. The track has never left the Top 10, spending five weeks in the Top 5 before bagging the Number 1 slot today, denying The Wanted their third UK Number 1 single.
Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe is a non mover at Number 3 in the song’s ninth week on chart, while last week’s chart topper Rita Ora FT Tinie Tempah’s RIP slips to fourth place. Alex Clare completes today’s Top 5 with Too Close (5).
New entries and high climbers
Hackney’s glittering showgirl of pop Paloma Faith makes a welcome return to the Official Singles Chart this week as Picking Up The Pieces, the Nellee Hooper-produced first single taken from her forthcoming second studio album, enters at Number 7. Fall To Grace, the new album from which the track is takenis released tomorrow (Monday, May 28).
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull have teamed up again after the success of their 2011 chart-topping collaboration On The Floor. Dance Again is one of two new entries today for Pitbull, Dance Again sits just outside the Top 10 today at Number 11, while Pitbull’s Back In Time lands at 23.
Kylie Minogue set the Twittersphere alight on Friday as fans were urged to tweet the words #KylieTimebomb in order to unlock a surprise new track from the Aussie superstar. 2012 is the 25th anniversary of the start of Kylie’s musical career, and in her new video for Timebomb sees the pop queen once again rocking a pair of hotpants as she struts through the streets of Central London, including Soho’s famous Old Compton Street. Timebomb has already impacted the Top 40, clocking up a Number 31 after less than two days on sale. French DJ/producer Martin Solveig’s Night Out is the only other new entry at 36.
The current blistering heatwave across the UK also appears to be making its own impact on the Official Chart, as it seems enough of the British public have this week snapped up the DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince classic Summertime to send it cruising all the way back into the Top 100 where it is chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool at Number 50.
