The Wanted help Reggie Yates celebrate 60 years of the Official Single
It was a sea of cake and balloons in the Radio 1 studio tonight as host of the Radio 1 Official Chart, Reggie Yates, with a little help from chart stars The Wanted, kicked off this week’s glittering celebrations of 60 Years of the Official Singles Chart!
With two Number 1 singles already under their belt, and this week’s highest new entry with new single, I Found You (Number 3), UK boyband The Wanted did the honours on behalf of the Official Charts Company (compilers and guardians of the Official Singles Chart), to deliver a surprise cake to Reggie Yates in the Radio 1 Official Chart studio.
However, the lads couldn’t quite wait for the photos and instead dived straight in for a cheeky munch!
Reggie, who it was this week announced will be leaving Radio 1 at the end of the year to pursue new TV and film projects, says “It’s been pretty good fun today because we’ve been celebrating 60 years of the Official Singles Chart. We’ve got balloons, we’ve got an Official Chart cake that The Wanted actually butchered live on air!
“It’s been an amazing pleasure hosting this show for the last five years. Literally 55 years before I started hosting this show something amazing started, and it will hopefully continue for many more years to come!”
Jameela Jamil will take over from Reggie as the new face of The Official Chart.
Jay from The Wanted said “It’s the Official Singles Chart’s 60th birthday today, and you don’t look a day over 59… even though you literally are! You must have had Botox because you look beautiful, you’ve done amazingly for 60 years. Congratulations!”
The Official Singles Chart, the institution that has kept pop fans like you and us salivating with anticipation week in, week out, since we were knee-high to a grasshopper, turns 60 on Wednesday 14th November, exactly 60 years after the very first ever chart was published in the pages of NME back in November 1952.
