2019 was a big year for artist breakthroughs, with several UK and international acts scoring hugely successful debut albums.
In fact, the UK's biggest album of 2019 was a debut; Lewis Capaldi's Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent shifted 641,000 chart sales to be the year's most popular record. View the Official Top 40 biggest albums of 2019 in full.
Billie Eilish with her Official Number 1 Album Award
Another artist who made a big impression in 2019 was Billie Eilish. The US singer-songwriter landed at Number 1 with her debut set When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? back in April with first week chart sales of 48,000, becoming the youngest female artist ever to top the Official Albums Chart. The record, which includes spin-off Top 10 hits Bad Guy and Bury A Friend, scored a total of 370,000 chart sales in 2019.
Early 2019 also saw British singer-songwriter Tom Walker top the charts with his first album What A Time To Be Alive. Success continued throughout the year, landing hit singles with Just You & I and Better Half Of Me, keeping the album afloat throughout the year to finish as 2019's third biggest debut with 270,000 chart sales.
Dave with his Official Number 1 Album Award
Last year also saw UK rap dominate the Official Charts - including one week where the genre accounted for over a third of the Top 40 singles chart - and London-born rapper Dave was one of its leading artists. His debut album, Psychodrama - the year's fourth biggest debut - landed at Number 1 in March and went on to win the Mercury Prize in September.
Other big debut albums in 2019 include Sam Fender's chart-topping Hypersonic Missiles and the self-titled debut by Freya Ridings, which debuted at Number 3 in July.
