The UK's Official Top 100 biggest albums by female artists of the century
We honour the female voices that cut through and have dominated the music landscape over the last two decades.
March 8 is International Women's Day, and while the intention behind it is laudabe, it should - of course - be a way we live, rather than a symbolic day.
To mark the occasion, Official Charts is honouring the female voices that have cut through and dominated the music landscape over the last two decades by revealing the UK's Official Top 100 biggest albums fronted by female artists since 2000.
Unsurprisingly, Adele features prominently, having released some of the most successful albums of all time over the past 12 years. Her second collection 21 tops the list with 5.12 million chart sales (pure sales and streaming equivalent sales combined), while 25 is at 3 (3.6m) and her 2008 debut 19 places ninth (2.45m). It was in 2011 that Adele's success went stratospheric, when a raw and emotional performance of Someone Like You at the BRIT Awards cemented her status as the voice of a generation.

Another artist with multiple entries in the list is Amy Winehouse. Her second record Back To Black - a dark and often heartbreaking collection of soul-pop that would be her last living release - is the UK's second biggest female artist album of the century with 4.03m chart sales. Amy's debut album Frank - equally as critically adored - ranks 55th on 1.09m, while posthumous collection Lioness: Hidden Treasures is at 80 on 896k.
Big hitters Rihanna and Madonna each make four entries in the Top 100, while Beyonce - who after more than 20 years in music continues to push boundaries for feminism and women of colour - makes three entries with I Am Sasha Fierce (1.74m), Dangerously In Love (1.26m) and 4 (791k). More R&B/soul artists are represented on the list with two albums by British singer Gabrielle, Emeli Sande's thunderously successful debut Our Version of Events (2.44m), a pair of Whitney Houston retrospectives and two hugely successful records by Alicia Keys.
However, it's Pink who has the most entries on the list, with five. 2002's Missundazstood - which featured chart-topper Just Like A Pill and hits Get The Party Started, Don't Let Me Get and Family Portrait - is her biggest overall on 1.86m. The album saw the US singer-songwriter take creative authority over her music and image, fighting against the hyper-sexualised teen-pop sound of the early 2000s. It's best summarised in Don't Let Me Get Me's opening line, which takes aim at Arista Records' label head L.A Reid: "L.A. told me, 'You’ll be a pop star/ All you have to change is everything you are.'"
Female rock and folk artists also feature in the Top 100, including albums by KT Tunstall, Sharleen Spiteri-led Scottish band Texas and the Amy Lee-fronted Evanescence. Girl groups, many of which have always promoted a message of female solidarity, score multiple entries in the list, including Destiny's Child, Little Mix, Sugababes and Girls Aloud.

Elsewhere, a handful of albums in the Top 100 released before 2000 continue to enjoy success more than 20 years on, including Tracey Chapman's self-titled debut released in 1988 (589k since 2000), and Songbird by Eva Cassidy - a compilation of the US singer's work released two years after her death in 1998 that went on to top the chart in 2001 (1.84m since 2000).

"Fever" by Kylie should be much higher in the top 10! That album was cutting edge at that time, IMHO.

Not sure... it's possible sales are at around 1.79 now (but this article was 3 years ago).
Almost elligible for a 6xPlatinum.

Courtney Puzzo
25 is at 3.6 million in the UK now so eligible for 12 x platinum also Chart masters has 21 at 5.3 million and both will likely get updated certifications when her new album comes out later this year also some of those others have major anniversaries coming in the next few years for example Fleetwood Mac's Rumours turns 45 in February 2022 and Abba's Gold Greatest hits turns 30 in September 2022

@Phillip King some of those numbers are out of date for example ABBA Gold Greatest Hits passed 5.7 million combined sales last week 728,750 prior to UK implementing their equivalent of Soundscan and 4.971.250 since February 1994 also Fleetwood Mac's Rumours number is out of date it's sold 4.292.700 combined sales and 1.772.100 since the week ending 1st February 1994 also Adele's total sales of her three albums combined is 11.4 million in the UK while its 28,000,000 in the US around 17% of the UK population own an Adele album while in the US the percentage is 8.4% granted The UK is 1/5 the size of the US in population granted some of the albums have big anniversaries coming up such at 10 for Adele's 21 in January 2021 in the UK/Europe and February 2021 in the US in 2022 Rumours turns 45 in February 2022 and Abba Gold turns 30 in September 2022 Also Norah Jones Come Away With Me's last number is 4 years out of date the album could feasibly be 9 x platinum now and celebrates it's 20th anniversary in June 2022. Abba Gold is currently #25 on year to date sales with 64,800 copies sold in the UK

As 2022 the TOP 3 remains the same.
#01 Adele is at around 5.4 million now
#02 Amy Whinehouse is at 4.3 million now!
#03 Madonna is at over 4.2 already (automatic certification from 2022 put it at 3.9 but it was already due for a new platinum in 2010 according to BBC - it had sales over 3.6 million in 2003 already).
These are the only female album artits that sold over 4 million units each in UK so far!

tracy chapman 589k since 2000? Mariah carey's emancipation was 700k..it isnt in chart

Just only 2 Kylie's albums on the list?? Her first one, in 1988 sold millions

Fact Checker
Pink - Missundaztood. Had sold 1,945k by October 2017 according to Music Week, so about 1,960k now, not 1,860k. Thus, should be at #16 on the list.
Atomic Kitten - Feels So Good. Had sold over 860k by 2009 according to the OCC. Therefore, should be somewhere in the region of #85 or #86 on the list, not #92k.
Adele & Tracy Chapman nonsense already noted by others.
ABBA and Fleetwood Mac are fronted by women. Should both have albums on this list.
I keep saying this. I'll check your articles, for free, before you post them, so you don't keep publishing stuff that is riddled with errors.

Fact is that most sales here are not accurated and lower than reality.
Probably the positions are correct.
Cosma Cosina Gensi
Don't know how Tracy Chapman, who "sold 589K since 2000" managed to rank at no.72 while Amy's "Lioness", released in December 2011, stands at 896K at no.80 (and Madonna's "GHV2", 868,5K reported in July 2019, is at no.85). Maybe Tracy sold 989K instead of 589K?
Bengy
On 12th October 2019 the OCC said,
"Adele's trilogy of albums have a combined total of 11.17 million chart sales, including 5.16 million for 21." So why are sales of 21 now 5.12 million?
As Courtney says they should be 5.18 million.
Luis Carlos Gálvez Puerma
Where is Jagged Little Pill of Alanis Morissette? The album sold in UK over 2,700,000
Bengy
It was released in the previous century.
Rob Parkinson
As was Tracy Chapmans debut album but think it is just counting the figures since year 2000?
NN

Tracy Chapman was a much bigger catalog sales.
The various 2000's cover versions of her hit songs certainly helped her catalog sales to be bigger.
Rob Parkinson
They have been getting covered since the 90s to great success, shame her individual singles didn't chart so well for her except fast car
CP
Courtney Puzzo
the numbers for 21 are off they currently stand at 5.18 million in the UK and will likely see a large increase this year if her new album is released and does well her catalog will have renewed interest and could earn updated certifications
NN
Nu No
Most numbers are lower so they probably got a bit older update numbers for most albums (probably until the end of 2019 for some albums and until the end of 2018 or even 2017 only for other albums) .
