After a quarter of a century in charge at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson announced this morning (Wednesday, May 8) that he is stepping down as the club's manager.
During his 26 year tenure, Ferguson (71) took the club to 13 league victories, two Champions League wins, five FA Cups and four League Cups. To celebrate his career, we look back at the Official Singles Chart Top 10 when he took over at the club (week ending November 8, 1986).
Berlin were Number 1 with Take My Breath Away from the soundtrack to Tom Cruise’s Top Gun. The US synthpop band had toppled EastEnders star Nick Berry from the Official Singles Chart summit after a three week stand with Every Loser Wins (Number 2) at the start of the week.
Status Quo were at Number 3 with their 20th Top 10 hit, In the Army Now, while The Bangles were at Number 4 with Walk Like An Egyptian. The Top 5 was completed by Cliff Richard and Sarah Brightman’s All I Ask Of You (Number 5).
