The Official Top 40 biggest songs of 2019
Songs by Lewis Capaldi, Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish were among the biggest of 2019.
The UK’s Top 40 biggest songs of 2019 have been unveiled, and Lewis Capaldi takes the Number 1 spot with Someone You Loved.
The Scottish singer-songwriter’s big breakout track, which spent seven weeks at Number 1 across March/April, notched up a massive 2.33 million chart sales in 2019, according to Official Charts Company data. Someone You Loved is also the year’s most-streamed song, with 228 million audio streams across the likes of Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.
The news comes as music trade body the BPI revealed that music consumption in the UK was up for fifth year in a row, with 114 billion music streams logged in 2019 – up 3,000% on 2012.
Three more Lewis Capaldi songs finish inside the year-end Top 40: Top 5 hit Hold Me While You Wait at 14, Bruises at 25 and Grace at 27. View Lewis Capaldi's Official UK Chart history in full.
Another 2019 breakthrough star, US rapper and singer Lil Nas X, takes second place with Old Town Road on 1.75 million chart sales. The hip-hop-meets-country track, which first gained success as a viral hit on Tik Tok, spent two weeks at Number 1 across April/May.

What were the sales (i.e. without streams) figures for this best seller? The year before, the Calvin Harris best seller only managed a meagre 244,000 ( https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-top-40-biggest-songs-of-2018__22432/ ), which must be one of the lowest "best sellers" of all time. It would be interesting to know if the decline in sales continues.

Poor Mabel, not getting much attention on here yet the only British Female to get in the top 40 of the year and should 'call me up' have been released a different time of year it would have easily been a no.1. Charts can be so cruel sometimes as it was for Billie Eilish too, guess timing can be everything.
Jason Lindley
The chart sales are so overhyped and the way streams are counted in the charts needs to change. The big streaming players have so much control of the charts and more older artists struggle to hit the top 40. Something needs to change.

If you don't make the sales you don't chart. That's what a chart means
Andii
The point is that these aren't sales figures, but combined sales & streaming figures. The year before, the biggest seller managed only 244,000 sales. It's interesting that they don't even include the 2019 figure.

Apparently, 2019 was the first year that saw more than 100 billion music streams across the UK.
‘Someone You Loved’, which was the most streamed song of the past 12 months, got 228 million plays! :O

Wow
Piran
Yeah, I knew streaming accounted for almost all singles consumption units, but I never expected it to be on this level!

I expected Someone You Loved to be #1 this year, but I really wanted Old Town Road to be it. I’m surprised Dance Monkey and Senorita to be that low and I expected Take Me Back To London to be in the top 20 as well. Do you know when they’re releasing the full top 100?

I think if Tones and I had released at beginning of year she would be no 1. I draft my case George Ezra as my case in point no 12 despite being released in mid 2018. I suspect tones and I will feature in 2020 top 40
JF

That’s probably true. I wish Shotgun wasn’t so high because it was real eased mid last year 😔.

I’ll hopefully do a full review of the Chart Of The Year later today, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s looking good! :)
‘Someone You Loved’ is one of those ballads that never got old despite insane airplay numbers & reminding me a lot of a deeper cut that Ed Sheeran or James Arthur would do, so it’s amazing to see it #1 here (probably would’ve been in the Top 20 almost every week of last year if it weren’t for ACR).
‘Sweet But Psycho’, ‘Dance Monkey’, ‘Old Town Road’ & especially ‘Senorita’ placing elsewhere in the Top 10 here is really awesome, especially the latter got a 10/10 from me when I reviewed it!
I don’t mind ‘Giant’ being the highest charting EDM hit here, but I love that ‘Piece Of Your Heart’ follows it & ‘SOS’ ranks at #34, with Avicii & Aloe Blacc having my personal favourite song of the year.
More to follow either later or when OCC publish the full list...

Hi piran
Turns out 'river' grew on me a lot more than I thought it would although no Christmas song beats mariah carey or wham. Own it will defiantly be number one by Friday, which is cool because that's grown on me a lot more as well. I also expected someone you loved to be the uk's biggest song of 2019 and I love seeing so much good music in the top 40 alone! Love it that halsey, ariana grande, billie eilish and camila cabello made appearances but no taylor swift?? Also surprised that Regard and Young T & Bugsey fit into the top 40. Do u know when the full top 100 will be revealed. Most likely it will be revealed on Friday along with the updated chart.
Hope you've had a really good start to 2020, happy new year!!

A song I’ve listened to this year is Marshmello, Youngblud and Blackbear on ‘Tongue Tied’. I’m surprised it hasn’t made it to top 50 yet. Maybe give it a listen?
