The Official Top 20 biggest cassettes of 2023
Olivia Rodrigo, Kylie Minogue and Lana Del Rey have some of the biggest cassettes of 2023.
Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS is officially the biggest cassette album of 2023, Official Charts can reveal today.
Sales of cassettes in the UK surpassed six figures annually for the fourth consecutive year in 2023, reaching around 136,000 units according to Official Charts Company data. The top-selling cassette of 2023, GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo, shifted nearly 8,500 copies on the format during its first week of release in September.
The second album from the US singer-songwriter, GUTS followed the extraordinary success of her debut LP, SOUR, and was Olivia's second consecutive UK Number 1 album.
It also contained her third UK Number 1 single with the gothic ballad vampire and two further Top 10 hits; bad idea right? (3) and get him back! (7).
In second place on the list of 2023's best-selling cassettes is Ed Sheean's - (Subtract), the sixth album from the UK superstar contained production work from The National's Aaron Dessner, Fred again.., Max Martin and Shellback. -'s biggest hit on the Official Singles Chart was lead track Eyes Closed, which became Ed's 14th UK Number 1 single.
Coming in at Number 3 is Kylie Minogue's Tension, a revelatory comeback for the Australian pop icon thanks to the viral successes of singles Padam Padam (which became Kylie's first Top 10 single in 12 years) and the title track.
The year-end Official Cassette Top 5 is completed by Inhaler's second record Cuts & Bruises (4) and Blur's UK Number 1 album The Ballad of Darren (5).
2023 releases completing the Top 10 include Lana Del Rey's chart-topping Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. (6), Sleep Token's Take Me Back To Eden (7), Lewis Capaldi's Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent (8), Hozier's Unreal Unearth (9) and The 1975's Record Store Day exclusive drop Live With The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (10).
We have a few 2023 UK Number 1 albums also appearing in the wider Top 20; Busted's Greatest Hits 2.0 (13), Lathums' From Nothing To A Little Bit More (14), Taylor Swift's 1989 (Taylor's Version) (16), Foo Fighters' But Here We Are (17) and Gorillaz's Cracker Island (20).
