Releases from Arctic Monkeys, Mogwai, Bruce Springsteen and Elbow are among the Top 5 biggest selling vinyl albums of 2014 so far.
AM by Arctic Monkeys has been revealed as the UK’s biggest selling vinyl album of 2014 so far, according to the Official Charts Company’s sales data.
The Sheffield-based band’s fifth full-length, which was released in September last year, has continued selling through the start of the new year, a performance which has been partly boosted by the band’s double win (Band Of The Year and Album Of The Year) at the BRIT Awards in February. Yesterday (Friday, April 18), AM was also unveiled as the biggest selling album in the UK’s independent record shops.
The biggest selling vinyl album to be released in 2014 is Mogwai’s Rave Tapes (Number 2 in the year to date chart), followed by Bruce Springsteen’s High Hopes (3), Elbow’s The Take Off And Landing Of Everything and Warpaint’s self-titled second album (5).
The success of the various albums has helped get 2014 off to the best start in more than a decade for vinyl albums. Last year saw 790,000 vinyl albums sold in the UK – but 2014 is already more than one-third of the way to that target after 15 weeks, putting it on course for sales around 900,000 for the full year (if sales continue at the current rate).
This surge of interest is also even before this weekend’s Record Store Day 2014 celebrations, which are expected to significantly boost vinyl sales even further. 240 independent record stores across the country opening their doors to music fans, with a massive programme of in store performances and more than 600 special vinyl and CD releases by artists ranging from One Direction, Elbow, Damon Albarn, Green Day, Jake Bugg, Paul Weller, Nirvana, David Bowie and Nile Rodgers.
