The Mysterines talk brand-new album Afraid of Tomorrows

The second release from Lia Metcalfe, George Favager, Callum Thompson and Paul Crilly tracks to become their second Top 10
The Mysterines

The Mysterines' lives have changed exponentially in just two years.

While their debut studio album Reeling, which became the Wirral-formed group's first-ever Top 10 LP, was written through the restrictive COVID-19 lockdown, they've since gone on to tour with Arctic Monkeys and record a whole new album under very different circumstances.

Afraid of Tomorrows, the second full-length release from Lia Metcalfe, George Favager, Callum Thompson and Paul Crilly, sees the group team up with GRAMMY-winning producer John Congleton, and was penned in the freedom of the British countryside.

Today, as the record tracks to become their second Official Top 10, we catch up with the band for a chinwag.

Hello, The Mysterines! Congratulations on the release of Afraid of Tomorrows. How does it feel to have it out there?

It’s always a nice feeling putting new music out, we’ve been loving playing the new songs live so it’s great to finally release the full album.

What's the reaction from fans been at your signings this week?

The reaction has been great, all the in-stores have sold out so far, so people seem to be connecting with the new songs, which is always really nice to see.

Have they made their favourite tracks from the record known yet?

Yeah! Hawkmoon, Jesse You're A Superstar, So Long and Junkyard Angel seem to be the favourites at the moment.

MORE: Every Glastonbury Festival headliner ever

How did the writing and recording process differ this time around. You weren't in lockdown, for a start...

These songs were written over the course of a few writing trips. We wanted to immerse ourselves entirely in the process to get the best out of ourselves creatively, so we felt the need to escape from the city to do that.

What were your biggest inspirations for this album?

Sparklehorse, The Kills and Kraftwerk.

Your debut album, Reeling, went Top 10 in 2022. How did you celebrate?

Last time we were on tour in Dublin. It was St. Paddy’s night, so we had quite the celebration, as did the venue’s sound tech. They hadn’t been to sleep for two days and we think were still tripping on acid!

Interesting scenes. Finally, The Mysterines, which artists are you loving at the moment?

Paul - Divorce
George - Néomi
Callum - King Hannah
Lia - DBA
