The Last Dinner Party: Who are the BRITs Rising Star and Sound Of... 2024 winners?

The indie-rock five piece have had an extraordinary rise across the last 18 months.

The Last Dinner Party have been announced as the winners of both the  BRITs 2024 Rising Star award and the BBC's Sound Of...2024 poll.

The wins - where they were nominated alongside the likes of Tyla, Peggy Gou, Caity Baser and Sekou - caps off an extraordinary two years for the indie rock band, who only performed together for the first time in 2021, after COVID scuppered their plans for a proper launch.

Who are BRITs Rising Star 2024 winners The Last Dinner Party?

Comprised of Abigail Morris, Lizzie Mayland, Emily Roberts, Georgia Davies, and Aurora Nishevci, the genesis of The Last Dinner Party starts, as it does for most British bands, at university. Originally, Abbie, Lizzie and Emily met and formed a band together, which was initially called The Dinner Party (although they would later change their moniker due to similarities with US hip-hop supergroup Dinner Party), and recommendations from friends added Georgia and Aurora to the fold.

But the growth of the band was hobbled somewhat by COVID, meaning that the first time the band actually all performed together in the same room was on stage at The George in London for their first ever gig in 2021.

But from there, things grew quickly. The Last Dinner Party signed a deal with Island Records and set about prioritising growing their audience organically through live performances, which meant the band built up significant hype over 18 months without ever releasing a single song.

But when the band did decide to drop music, they introduced a bracing art-rock aesthetic that instantly captured people's attention.

Case in point their debut single Nothing Matters, which was produced by James Ford (best known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Jessie Ware), an airy and intelligent post-punk banger that sees frontwoman Abigail channel the wild, untamed energy of Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

"And you can hold me like he held her," she rages in the chorus, "and I will f*ck you, like nothing matters."

Parallels to both Kate and Siouxsie are to be expected, given that the band have admitted in the past that both acts have influenced their performance style and songwriting. But their biggest inspiration by far? Every member agrees that it's David Bowie (and you have to agree, there is something of the Thin White Duke about Abigail's bombastic performance style).

Even before their nomination for the BRITs Rising Star for 2024, The Last Dinner Party were already expecting a breakthrough 12 months next year. February 2024 will bring the release of their debut album, Prelude To Ecstacy, and the potential for their music to reach its widest audience yet.
