SZA hints at new tracks for SOS deluxe edition and fears of album 'flopping' before release
SZA has hinted at the fan-favourite tracks we can expect to appear on the upcoming deluxe edition of her sophomore album SOS, as well as admitting that she was scared before release that the album wouldn't succeed.
Following her influential debut LP Ctrl in 2017, SZA took her time on the follow-up, crafting an intimate world of heartbreak, anger and ultimately acceptance in a album that searches, ultimately, for the meaning in chaos.
It did take a while for SZA (real name Solana Rowe) to issue SOS, with the album in development for almost half a decade before its arrival. And in a new interview, SZA admitted that she nearly pulled the album a week before it was due to drop.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, SZA admitted that she text her record label that "we don't have to put [the album] out, we could just pull out and move it to January."

Luckily, however, SZA did stick to her gut feeling and SOS finally arrived on December 9 after months, if not years, of heightened anticipation. Receiving acclaim across the board from critics for her songwriting, the languid production and the deft fluidity of the many genres including in the record (from indie-pop on Phoebe Bridgers collab Ghost In The Machine to the punk-rock edges of F2F) SOS became SZA's first album to chart in the Official Albums Chart Top 10 in the UK, charting at Number 2 behind Sam Ryder's There's Nothing But Space, Man!
SZA also revealed on the status of some tracks that fans are anxious to hear on SOS' deluxe edition. In a new radio interview, SZA started that tracks including PSA, Boy From South Detroit and Joni were all in contention to be included in the original edition, but missed out because they didn't fit in with her vision for the album.
But don't worry, apparently PSA and Boy From South Detroit will definitely be on the deluxe edition, as with a special new feature from Lizzo too. In a behind-the-scenes video from the making of the album, SZA also revealed that some of her ideal collaborations to be featured in the album which ultimately didn't come to fruition included Doja Cat, Frank Ocean and Harry Styles.
