Stranger Things have happened...Kate Bush and Sex Pistols set for UK Top 5 success this week

Kate Bush's viral hit Running Up That Hill is challenging for Number 1 this week - while the Sex Pistols could return to the Top 5 for the first time in 43 years.

It could be the battle of two pop titans. Kate Bush’s classic Running Up That Hill could leap up six places to  Number 2 this week – can it challenge Harry Styles for Number 1? Originally released in 1985, where the track peaked at Number 3, it could reach its highest-ever peak thanks to Stranger Things.

Sex Pistols re-released two very special vinyl pressings of their controversial anti-monarchist anthem God Save The Queen and are looking to re-enter the Top 5 for the first time in 43 years.

Following a stirring performance at last night’s Platinum Party at the Palace, Sam Ryder’s Eurovision anthem SPACE MAN might break back into the top 10, currently its up two to Number 9.

Several slow-burning hits across the Official Singles Chart are on track to reach new peaks this week; including David Guetta, Becky Hill and Ella Henderson’s Crazy What Love Can Do (12), George Ezra’s Green Green Grass (13) and Nathan Dawe ft. Ella Henderson with 21 Reasons (16).

This week’s highest new entry could belong to Post Malone, I Like You (A Happier Song) comes from new album Twelve Carat Toothache and is cruising towards a Number 19 debut.

The Official Singles Chart Top 100 is revealed on OfficialCharts.com every Friday at 5.45pm. Follow the Top 40 countdown live on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart show with Scott Mills.

Thumbs up to the old school once again

Yes! I read that Running Up That Hill is No.8 in UK, also in USA, No.2 In Australia, and No.3 at Tik Tok Trending Songs. Congrats, Kate! 👏👏👏

Sales must be dire if a mediocre song from 1985 is '#2 midweek.
R.I.P. the UK singles chart.

You sound fun.

Brilliant to see Harry Styles remain at #1 for what will hopefully be a tenth week. Amazing to see RUTH at #2 - despite permanent ACR. Hopefully Calvin & Dua will pick up pace in the coming weeks.

If she manages to sell twice what Harry is selling she can beat him to #01.
It's not impossible looking at streaming and iTunes chart.

Ironically, 'As It Was' would itself be on ACR were it not for the boost resulting from the release of Harry's House

I know its extremely unlikely, but I would love for the OCC to grant Kate Bush's label request to reset RUTH, it would be amazing if it could go to #1!

Hmm...not quite sure how 'Running Up That Hill' is not at #1 on this update, the track has been hugely ahead of 'As it Was' on sales and streaming over the past 3 days - 774K for RUTH vs 496K for AIW on Sat, for instance - and is massive on tiktok right now too...what am I missing here?

RUTH is on permanent ACR

J

Jovian

Why would that be? This is overwhelmingly it's biggest ever streaming week, and only streaming data is used to determine when ACR kicks in for an older track. ACR takes effect only after more than nine weeks on the chart and three consecutive weeks of decline below the market streaming rate of change, neither of which applies to RUTH.

Songs that are at least three years old and over are permanently placed on ACR.

I don’t get ACR. I don’t get why it exists.

It helps keep the charts fresh I suppose but in this instance with RUTH it feels unfair.

J

Well, it's not so much that it's unfair, but rather that it's not accurate. You have a track that is, by any metric, by far the biggest single in the UK right now, a position that it's never been in before, and that position is being artificially manipulated downward. That pretty much defeats the purpose of the chart to accurately represent what is selling/streaming most.

MKS

1

Lol but that’s the rules of the chart - they don’t just apply to RUTH, they apply to all songs 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agreed.

They need to change those rules! They manipulate and distorce the charts real data.

I don’t disagree 👍🏼

any song over 3 years old is on permanent ACR, the same reason why Love Tonight took a while to go top 40 (the label had to ask for a manual reset)

So Mr Brightside should also be much higher?

Disappointed that Tate McRae hasn't got any songs in the Top 20 for now!

Hopefully her album itself will perform well though. :)

I know it's only a First Look chart, but the fact both Kate Bush & $ex Pistols are in the Top 5 in the same chart in 2022 is still incredible! 😂

Yes. It shows what an awful load of sh*t contemporary artists are releasing.

Nah, there are some good current artists in the First Look right now, take Sam Ryder & Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa for example!

Besides, we’ve also got Sigrid climbing towards the Top 40 & she’s one of the most underrated popstars right now. :)

Not heard the song yet, so can’t really comment on it, but I think it’ll be fairly frontloaded given that it’s only being pushed by physical CD sales & the Jubilee weekend is now over. :/

Down to #24 in the midweek chart, so expect it to fall even further by the end of the week.
