Stock Aitken Waterman hits to feature in new musical I Should Be So Lucky
The (many, many) hits of '80s pop masters Stock Aitken and Waterman will soon be treading the boards, as part of a brand new musical called I Should Be So Lucky.
Manned by Pete Waterman, Matt Aitken and Mike Stock, SAW are considered one of the greatest British hitmaking machines of all time, claiming over 100 Top 40 hits on the Official Singles Chart with acts such as Kylie Minogue, Dead Or Alive and Bananarama, with the greatest concentration of their success happening through the hi-NRG boom of the 80s and lasting well into the 90s.
Clearly inspired by the likes of jukebox musicals such as Mamma Mia! (which adapted the hits of ABBA) and We Will Rock You (for Queen), I Should Be Lucky will be written and directed by Debbie Isitt (best known as the creator of the Nativity! film series) and is set to follow couple young couple Ella and Nathan who are about to get married...until it "all goes wrong."
The cast of Stock Aitken Waterman musical I Should Be So Lucky
The full case for I Should Be So Lucky includes Kayla Carter (The Color Purple, Bedknobs and Broomsticks) as Bonnie, Jamie Chapman (Nativity! The Musical, The Mousetrap) as Spencer, Jemma Churchill (Guys and Dolls, Nativity! The Musical) as Ivy, Matthew Croke (Wicked, Aladdin) as Nadeem, Jessica Daley (Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables) as Britney, Gary Davis (Annie, Oklahoma!) as Big Mike, Melissa Jacques (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Mamma Mia!) as Shelley, Scott Paige (The Great British Bake Off Musical, Made in Dagenham) as Michael, Billy Roberts (Rock of Ages, Titanic The Musical) as Nathan, Giovanni Spanò (Jesus Christ Superstar, Bat Out of Hell) as Ash, Lucie-Mae Sumner (Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls) as Ella and Anna Unwin (Aspects of Love) as Olivia.
And if that wasn't enough, apparently the show will also include a very special 'digital' appearance from perhaps SAW's most successful and potent muse, Kylie Minogue. Under the label PWL, Kylie kickstarted her career as pop's most chameleonic, charismatic force, including hits like show namesake I Should Be So Lucky, Especially For You with Jason Donovan and Better The Devil You Know.
Kylie will appear in I Should Be So Lucky as 'a unique character created especially for the show,' saying: "It is the music that inspired a generation (plus my first five albums!) so to have all the SAW hits in this original story will make for a compelling, funny and heartfelt show. Let’s enjoy the magic all over again!”
The show will feature 25 songs overall, also including hits like Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up.
I Should Be So Lucky will debut at Manchester Opera House on 2 November 2023, before heading off on a UK tour in 2024.
