As Ellie Goulding looks set to reclaim the Number 1 slot from Bruce Springsteen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Warpaint battle it out for this week’s highest new entry.

Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon may be leading the way, but a flurry of new entries from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Warpaint and Mogwai look set to disrupt the Official Albums Chart Top 5 this weekend.

With three BRITS nominations under her belt, Ellie Goulding is out in front in this week’s albums race, closely followed by reigning chart king Bruce Springsteen’s High Hopes, with Beyonce holding firm at Number 3, but three new entries are challenging for a Top 5 place midweek.

First up is pop stunner and Strictly Come Dancing starlet Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and if anyone loves a good chart battle, Sophie E-B does! After famously denying Victoria Beckham a solo Number 1 back in 2000 with her breakthrough chart-topping solo single Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love), Sophie went on to score six more Top 10 singles and four Top 40 albums.

The 34-year-old leaves her disco shoes behind her for her new, darker fifth studio offering Wanderlust, whichwas co-written by London singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt and leads the charge for the title of this week’s highest new entry. Wanderlust could also be Sophie’s highest charting album since her 2001 debut, Read  My Lips, which peaked at Number 2, providing she can keep Warpaint at bay, that is. The US indie rockers trail less than 300 copies at this midway stage with their eponymous second studio album (5).

New Entries

In addition to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Wanderlust (4) and Warpaint (5), there are two other new entries on today’s Official Albums Chart Update.

Scottish post-rock outfit Mogwai are also Top 10 bound. The Glaswegian quintet’s new album, The Rave Tapes is at Number 6 today. If it can continue to maintain its sales momentum, it will become the highest charting UK album of Mogwai’s career.

Meanwhile, Mike & The Mechanics are at 22 today with their new Best Of collection, The Singles - 1986-2014.

The Official Albums Chart Update Top 40 is as follows. The Official Albums Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here, on Sunday at 7pm.
