How Sonny Fodera, D.O.D and Jazzy made Somedays a UK Top 10 hit

The late-summer dance smash has proved to be a true slow burner on the Official Singles Chart - here's how the trio made it happen.

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder, but that hasn't stopped the rise of late summer banger Somedays up to the Top 10 of the Official Singles Chart.

A collaboration between Aussie DJ Sonny Fodera and UK disk jockey D.O.D, with a co-write and vocals from Irish dance vocalist Jazzy, Somedays has recently completed its fifth week inside the Top 10, rising to a brand new peak of Number 8.

It's become the second Top 10 for Sonny (following on from last year's Asking with MK and Clementine Douglas, which hit Number 7), the third for Jazzy (following 2022's breakout hit Make Me Feel Good with Belters Only which hit Number 4 and 2023's solo launch track Giving Me, which peaked at Number 3) and the first-ever for D.O.D.

"I never knew it was going to be this big," Sonny Fodera tells us over the phone, about Somedays's rising success. "But it just keeps rising and rising! It's incredible to see."

As Sonny tells it, he first started work on Somedays late last year, following a writing session with both Jazzy and fellow rising dance star Clementine Douglas (who is quickly becoming one-to-watch for a big breakout moment, following her feature on Top 10 hit Asking and a recent Top 20 placement with The Blessed Madonna's Happier).

"We created a few versions of that," Sonny recalls, "I was playing a lot of D.O.D's stuff at the time in my sets, I'm a massive fan of his music. I knew I wanted to get him on it, to get some of that extra, extra sauce on top. He is such a great producer and DJ."

For D.O.D (real name Daniel O'Donnell), Somedays is the first cresting of a wave he's been riding for years. His first UK Top 10 hit, D.O.D has previously flirted with Official Charts success, sinking two singles in the wider Top 40; hitting Number 15 with So Much In Love and Number 28 with Jax Jones and Ina Wroldsen on Won't Forget You last year.

"[A Top 10 single] is never something I thought I would ever achieve," D.O.D tells us on Zoom, as he tours the US. "The more my career has gone on, and the more I realise people are loving the music I'm making, it's really nice to see my tunes reaching such a wide audience. I'm buzzing. Really. I'm buzzing."

Both Sonny and D.O.D agree that Jazzy's vocals are the heart of Somedays, with her smooth-as-butter voice complimenting the feather-light production, sounding like something a soul singer from the 70s might pull off in the modern-day.

"Jazzy is amazing," D.O.D agrees, "and she's such a lovely girl. She's worked hard, she's a talented songwriter, big up Jazzy, honestly."

Sonny says Jazzy's performance on the track is "[reminiscent of] an old soul singer, she's incredible. I've been wanting to work with her for such a long time, ever since she dropped Make Me Feel Good with Belters Only, that was such a tune. We've been trying to get a session in together forever. She's incredible."

For both D.O.D and Sonny, Somedays is a watermark release in their careers. D.O.D tells us, "I used to be a commercial DJ, I played for 8 hours a night, every night, but it allowed me the freedom mid-week to teach myself how to produce my own music. It's been a long road to get here, I've been DJing for 15 years! I've never really experienced this level of success, but my work ethic hasn't changed.

"I think that makes me appreciate it even more because it's taken me so long to get here."

Somedays also marks Sonny's second UK Top 10 single under his indie label, Solotoko, which he runs with his wife (!).

"I've got a great team behind me," Sonny affirms. "It's been massive, especially to do it independently. I've done big shows in the UK, like Warehouse Project and Ally Pally. I feel like I'm building a fan base, but this is just massive."

As for what's next?  Both Sonny and D.O.D want to work with Calvin Harris (of course), while D.O.D is zoning in on a collab with Clementine Douglas in the future, and Sonny's teased that he now has "a few" songs in his back pocket, ready to be released.
