Simon Cowell is set to return to the X Factor later this year. It was revealed over the weekend that the music mogul, who left ITV’s reality TV singling contest to launch a US version of the X Factor in 2011, will replace Gary Barlow as head judge for the 2014 series.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be returning to The X Factor UK,” said Simon in a official statement. “It's been three years since I last judged the competition and I'm excited to find a global superstar again.
"The UK X Factor has set the benchmark in finding worldwide superstars over the years - including One Direction, Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd, Olly Murs, JLS and Little Mix."
However, following Simon’s return to the UK, US TV network Fox have decided to cancel the US version of the show. The X Factor USA's audience has halved over three years, dropping from 12 million in 2011 to six million in 2013.
"I've had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on The X Factor and American Idol," adds Simon. "And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public - most of the time!"
