Sam Smith has confirmed that he has recorded the theme song to the upcoming James Bond film Spectre.

After months of speculation, the soul singer finally announced that he has recorded the song Writing's On The Wall for the movie, which hits cinemas on October 26.

“This is one of the highlights of my career," Sam said. "I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song.

"I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."

Writing's On The Wall will be available to download and stream on September 25. The song was co-written with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jimmy Napes and marks the first Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965.

The producers of Spectre, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, said: "Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, Writing’s On The Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time."

To date their have been 23 James Bond themes. The most recent one, Adele's Skyfall for the film of the same name, peaked at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart and won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Skyfall is currently the highest-charting Bond theme ever alongside Duran Duran's A View To Kill (1985). As yet, a Bond theme has never topped the Official Singles Chart.

Meanwhile, Official Charts recently announced that Sam's debut album In The Lonely Hour had set a new record for the longest run in the Top 10 ever for a debut album.
