Sam Smith’s Money On My Mind becomes fastest selling debut single by a Critics’ Choice winner.

Just when Sam Smith thought his year couldn’t get any bigger or better, he’s landed himself a Number 1 with Money On My Mind, making him the first Critics’ Choice winner to go straight in at the top of the Official Singles Chart with a debut single. Well done, Sam!

Sam’s Money On My Mind has shifted 108,000 copies to land at the top spot, making it the fastest-selling debut single by a Critics’ Choice winner. While Sam featured on Naughty Boy’s massive Number 1 La La La in 2013, this is his first chart-topper going it alone.

Sam tells OfficialCharts.com: "It feels unbelievable, man! It's completely overwhelming and I don't actually know what to do with myself! It feels amazing. When La La La went to Number 1, I wrote quite a lot of that song and it was kind of just as much mine as it was Naughty Boy's, but having my own song at Number 1 is just absolutely incredible!"

Sam’s debut at the top brings an end to Clean Bandit’s four-week stint at Number 1 with Rather Be – they fall to Number 3.

Also enjoying the BRITs effect is Wednesday’s show-closer Pharrell Williams. His former chart-topper Happy climbs back up a place to Number 2.

Christina Aguilera scores her 24th Top 40 hit thanks to her collaboration with A Great Big World, who are making their Official Singles Chart debut. They’re new at Number 4 with Say Something. Last week’s Number 2 Stay The Night, from Zedd FT Paramore’s Hayley Williams, falls three slots to round off our Top 5.

New Entries and High Climbers

Aside from new entries from Sam Smith (1) and A Great Big World (4), a big new entry on the chart is the mashup performed by Bastille and Rudimental at the BRIT Awards. Dubbed ‘Bastimental’ on the night, the bands’ performed version of Pompeii and Waiting All Night is brand new at Number 21 after just three days on sale.

Climbing 48 places to break into the Top 40 this week are Canadian duo Tegan and Sara and comedy group The Lonely Island, led by US comedian Andy Samberg. Their track, Everything Is Awesom, efeatures in The Lego Movie.

New at Number 32, boyband M.A.D. score a second Top 40 hit with Fame & TV.

Wednesday’s 2014 BRIT Awards has had considerable impact on the Official Singles Chart with other tracks by winners and performers enjoying a chart renaissance.

Beyoncé performed XO at the star-studded ceremony at London’s O2, giving the track a boost to return to the Top 40, climbing 26 places and landing at Number 23. Her duet with husband Jay Z also goes back up the chart – Drunk In Love climbs eight places to Number 12. Beyoncé kicked off the second leg of her Mrs Carter Show , revised to include songs from her self-titled latest album, in Glasgow on Thursday night.

Bastille’s original version of Pompeii returns to the Top 40. The winners of 2014’s Best British Breakthrough BRIT Award zoom 41 places to Number 20.

Best British Male nominee John Newman's former Number 1 Love Me Again is also back in the Top 40. The Yorkshire-born star performed the track on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, and leaps 29 places to Number 33.

Best British Female winner Ellie Goulding gets a boost, with three songs in the Top 40. How Long Will I Love You and Goodness Gracious Me both climb to sit next to each other at Numbers 25 and 26 respectively, while her 2013 Number 1 Burn, which she performed on Wednesday, goes back up 18 places to re-enter the Top 40 at Number 35.
