Ryan Gosling and Billie Eilish Barbie songs score Oscar nominations
Ryan Gosling and Billie Eilish have just secured nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their work on the film Barbie.
Billie's UK Number 1 hit What Was I Made For? becomes her second Oscar nomination, she was previously nominated (and won) the Oscar for Best Original Song for her James Bond theme No Time To Die, taken from the film of the same name.
And while Ryan Gosling scored a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor nomination for his turn as Ken in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, the 80s ballad I'm Just Ken, which he performs in the film, has also won a Best Original Song Nod.
Although, technically, this Oscar would not go to Ryan himself but the song's writers and producers, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. But we will hopefully get to see Ken himself perform the track live at the Oscar's ceremony, which we're sure he's thrilled about.
What Was I Made For? topped the Official Singles Chart for one week last year, while I'm Just Ken reached a peak of Number 13, and was Ryan Gosling's first-ever entry in the UK's Official Chart.
Sadly, the other Number 1 hit from the Barbie soundtrack, Dua Lipa's Dance The Night, was snubbed for a nomination.
Other songs nominated this year include yet another nomination for Diane Warren (who has yet to win) for The Fire Inside from Flamin' Hot, performed by American singer and rapper Becky G.
Other noms include Jon Batiste's It Never Went Away from American Symphony and Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People) from Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.
In the main awards, Christopher Nolan's blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer got the most nods, with 13 total, including for Best Picture, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Barbie, the highest-grossing film of 2023 in total, walked away with a nomination for Best Picture and a surprise inclusion for America Ferrera on Best Supporting Actress, but main star Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were denied slots on the Best Actress and Best Director lists.
