Fan led campaign sees Rik's ‘lost’ World Cup single, Noble England, climb 27 places overnight.

Rik Mayall's single, Noble England, is set to challenge X Factor's Ella Henderson in the race to become this week's Number 1 single.

Ella's debut release, Ghost, shot ahead of the pack to debut at Number 1 on yesterday's Official Singles Chart midweek Update. However it faces tough competition from a fan-led campaign to get the late comedy star's 2010 single to Number 1 this weekend following his death on Monday (May 9).

Noble England, which was originally released for the 2010 World Cup, failed to chart first time around. But thanks to a social media campaign, the 'lost' track entered yesterday's midweeks at Number 38. 24 hours later, it has shot up a further 27 places and is currently at Number 11.

Rik Mayall's death this week was a shock to a whole generation of comedy fans - and their reaction in pushing his 2010 single is a reflection of how much he was loved,” comments Official Charts Company Chief Executive, Martin Talbot. “In turn, his new hit also underlines how the Official Singles Chart remains a modern day barometer of public opinion.”

Currently, England do not have an official World Cup 2014 anthem, after the Football Association dropped their support for Gary Barlow and Michael Owen’s re-recording of Take That’s Greatest Day.
