20 years ago this week Right Said Fred topped the Official Singles Chart with Deeply Dippy. Oh yes.

After their debut smash hit single, I’m Too Sexy proved to be um, too sexy for Number 1 (it was kept off the top spot by Bryan AdamsEverything I Do (I Do It For You) the previous summer), Deeply Dippy provided brothers Richard and Fred Fairbrass, and Rob Manzoli with their first UK Number 1.

Deeply Dippy, the London-based band’s third single, ended Shakespears Sister’s Stay’s two month reign at the top of the charts. It stayed at Number 1 for three weeks, and went on to become one of the biggest selling tracks of 1992. Deeply Dippy also earned Right Said Fred an Ivor Novello Award plus a BRIT Awards nomination. And we can see why…

Having debated it out at Official Charts HQ, our hypothetical Top 10 chart of the greatest pop lyrics of the ‘90s, ‘Deeply dippy, I’m your superman / I’ll explain, you’re my Lois Lane’ could defo be in there somewhere. Agreed?

The lasting legacy of Deeply Dippy and its cultural impact knows no bounds (work with us on this one); as well as providing the moniker for a chocolate fountain hire company, good old Maccy D’s couldn’t resist a bit of Fairbrass influence in their latest McNuggets ad campaign *1. And did you know the chart-topping former N-Dubz frontman Costadinos Contostavlos is rumoured to be calling his autobiography Deeply Dappy?!*2

Anyway, we’re deeply dippy ‘bout the fun we had, deeply mad, mad for the fun we had at the back of the school bus in the early ‘90s singing along to it, and now YOU can relive Richard and Fred doing what Duncan Goodhew never managed to do in the ‘80s, and Dominic Littlewood hasn’t managed since - making bald fun. (Please note Duncan and Dom, brass sections, always a winner.)

Set sail for seas of passion with us right here and now, just press play. Warning, may contain men in pink frilly shirts, bare chests, and tight, TIGHT, pants.

2012 is shaping up to be a real celebration of the hit single – later this year the Official Singles Chart is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Look out for more Official Charts Flashbacks in the coming weeks, and be sure to follow Official Charts on Facebook and Twitter for the latest Official Charts news.

*1 Please note, other brands of chicken nuggets and chocolate fountain hire companies are available.

*2 Okay, we made that last bit up, but we expect some royalties if this does make it to publication, Dappy.
