Paul Weller on target for Number 1 album

Paul Weller is back on top with new acclaimed album Sonik Kicks, the follow up to 2010’s Number 2 album Wake Up The Nation.

The release is Weller’s eleventh studio album and a more experimental, psychedelic offering according to critics. Sonik Kicks looks set to debut at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart this Sunday, this would be the ex-Jam and Style Council man’s fourth solo Number 1 album.

Last week’s Mother’s Day chart topper Military Wives follow in second place with debut album In My Dreams, while David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat is the week’s highest, climber shooting up six places to re-enter the Top 5 at Number 3. At Number 4 is Emeli Sande with Our Version Of Events.

The Official Charts Company revealed this past Monday that Adele’s 21 has now overtaken Pink Floyd’s 1973 epic, The Dark Side Of The Moon, in the UK’s all-time biggest selling albums chart. The news comes just three weeks after the London-born singer’s 2011 second album overtook sales of Michael Jackson’s Bad. 21 has now sold over 4,142,000 copies in the UK, making it the seventh biggest-selling album of all-time. However, with just 12,000 sales separating 21 from the Number 6 album, Dire Straits’ 1985 long player Brothers In Arms, Adele could easily overtake the British rockers by the end of this week. 21 is today’s Official Chart Update Number 5.

New entries

Albuquerque-based band The Shins are the second highest new entry on today’s Official Chart Update. Their major label debut Port Of Morrow, featuring the single Simple Song, is currently riding at Number 8 midweek. Miike Snow returns to the Official Albums Chart this week with new release Happy To You (16), with Odd Future’s The OF Tape – Vol 2 at 29, Faithless’s Passing The Baton – Live From Brixton is at 31, and The Band Perry’s eponymous album completing this week's Official Chart Update new entries.
