Olly Alexander has been dropping some hints about what we can expect from his forthcoming entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Over the weekend, it was announced (live on the Strictly Come Dancing finale, no less!) that Olly would be following in the footsteps of Mae Muller and Sam Ryder and will be taking to the stage in Malmo, Sweden as the UK's Eurovision representative.

Alongside this news, Olly also revealed that he will be stepping away from Years & Years now and kickstarting off his solo career as Olly Alexander with his Eurovision entry, and releasing music under his own name from here on in.

But, as we know, the most important part of entering Eurovision is ensuring that the song you use to enter is actually...good. And not just good. Banging.

And the hints that Olly has dropped so far have confirmed that, the as-yet-untitled song that we will be sending to Sweden is...well...it's not a ballad! Rejoice.

Talking to BBC News about his Eurovision hopes, Olly confirmed that he's working with producer Danny L Harle on the track. While not yet a well-known mainstream pop wizard like Max Martin, Harle has definitely established himself in the pop scene as a forward-thinking, futuristic collaborator. He was one of the architects that worked with Charli XCX on her futuristic mixtape Pop 2, and has helped fellow alt-pop savant Caroline Polachek craft her last two critically acclaimed solo albums; 2019's Pang and 2023's Deisre, I Want To Turn Into You.

Better still, alongside Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, Harle produced Dua Lipa's latest Number 2 hit, Houdini, and is executive producing her upcoming third album, due for release next year.

"I wrote the song with Danny and it'll be coming next year," Olly confirmed. "It's really good. It's going to be electronic. Something you can dance to. I can't say more than that."

Well, he can say a little bit more than that, actually. When asked if it was a ballad, Olly had a definitive answer to your worries.

"I mean, it wasn't gonna be a ballad. Or maybe it could have been a ballad. I love a ballad. Am I saying too much now? It's not a ballad."

Great news.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will take place in Malmö, Sweden, following Loreen's victory in Liverpool.

As usual, Eurovision will be split into three parts; two semi-finals and then the Grand Final, which will all take place next May. Semi-Final 1 is scheduled to air May 7 2024, with Semi-Final 2 airing May 9 2023 and the Grand Final on May 11 2023.
