Official Chart Flashback 1999: S Club 7 and Shania Twain narrowly miss out on Number 1

Britney Spears and Kellé Bryan also make chart debuts this week in 1999.
flasback 1999: shania twain and s club 7

This time 25 years ago, it was a big week on the Official Singles Chart. Actually, it was huge.

Eiffel 65's Blue (Da Ba Dee) notched the second of its three weeks at Number 1, but the Eurodance banger had to fend off strong competition from S Club 7 and Shania Twain

S Club entered at Number 2 with their second single S Club Party, which just missed out on matching the Number 1 debut of their first, Bring It All Back. Still, S Club Party has gone on to accumulate 528,000 total chart units, making it the group's fifth-biggest selling single in the UK.

Shania's girls' night out anthem Man! I Feel Like a Woman! entered at Number 3, equalling the peak of her previous single That Don't Impress me Much.  Though Man! I Feel Like a Woman has never made Number 1 – and surprisingly, neither have any of Shania's other singles – it has gone on to accumulate 1.3 million total chart units.

It has also amassed 108 million UK streams – more than the 88 million racked by Blue (Da Ba Dee). So while Shania may have lost the chart battle, she has won the streaming war... so far, anyway.

Don't feel too bad for Eiffel 65, though. With 1.8 million total chart units, Blue (Da Ba Dee) sits at number 13 on the Official Charts' best-selling singles of all time list. It's also a million-selling single in terms of pure sales.

What's more, it was heavily sampled in another Number 1 hit, David Guetta and Bebe Rexha's 2021 smash I'm Good (Blue).

Anyway, back to 1999, when the legendary Miss Britney Spears scored another notable new entry. Her third single You Drive Me Crazy entered at Number 5 to become the third of her 24 (to date) Top 10 hits. You Drive Me Crazy has now totted up a not-too-shabby 489,000 chart units including 24 million streams.

A little further down, former Eternal singer Kéllé Bryan entered at Number 14 with her debut solo single Higher Than Heaven. Sadly, it remains Kéllé's only solo chart hit to date, though she's still a familiar face thanks to her appearances on Hollyoaks and Loose Women.

What a week on the charts, and what a time to be alive.
