Nico & Vinz score first Number 1 for a Norwegian act since A-ha

It’s been a long time coming, but today the Official Singles Chart belongs to Norway thanks to singing/songwriting duo Nico & Vinz, whose debut hit Am I Wrong lands at Number 1 this week.

After spending five weeks in the lower reaches of the Top 100 based on streams alone, the track’s full release has seen Am I Wrong rocket straight to pole position this week. And Nico & Vinz couldn’t be happier.

On hearing they’d nabbed this week’s Number 1, they told OfficialCharts.com: "Wow! Thanks to all our British fans for making Am I Wrong the Number 1 single!”

And just to prove the UK’s Official Singles Chart is the one everybody’s watching, Nico & Vinz confessed: “Growing up in Oslo, we always dreamed of being at the top of the UK chart so for this now to be true is completely surreal. We are extremely grateful to you for making that happen and can’t wait to come and play it for you guys live very soon.”

Nico & Vinz’s Number 1 achievement puts them in very good company, and also makes them the first Norwegian act to take the Number 1 spot for almost 29 years. The last time the Norwegian flag flew at the top of the Official Singles Chart was when A-ha scored their only chart-topper, The Sun Always Shines On TV, which reigned supreme for two weeks in early 1986.

While other acts featuring Norwegian artists have made it to Number 1, including Abba, Aqua, and A1, Nico & Vinz are the first since A-ha to be wholly Norwegian.

Some other Norwegian acts to make an impact include Madcon, who had a hit with Beggin’ in 2008, Lene Marlin, whose Sitting Down Here reached Number 5 in 2000 and, of course, last year’s viral hit The Fox from Ylvis. After a week at Number 1, Magic!’s Rude slips one place, despite clocking up over a million streams this week.

There’s a new entry for Ryan Tedder ’s OneRepublic at Number 3. Love Runs Out give the band their sixth Top 40 hit in the UK. So far, they’ve notched up one chart-topper – 2013’s Counting Stars.

Another former Number 1, Cheryl Cole’s Crazy Stupid Love slips a further two places to land at Number 4, while George Ezra’s Budapest climbs one place to round off today’s Top 5.

New Entries and High Climbers

Aside from Nico & Vinz’s giant leap and OneRepublic’s debut, there are three more tracks breaking into the Top 40 this week.

At Number 34,Jessie Ware scores her first ever Top 40 hit with Tough Love, taken from the forthcoming album of the same name. Earlier this week, Jessie admitted she wasn’t sure her single would make the Top 40, telling OfficialCharts.com: “I don’t think the song is radio friendly at all! This song was just to give people a taster of what’s to come, so for it to chart is crazy and really reassuring ahead of the new album.”

Ed Sheeran rises 12 places to Number 23 with new single Don't, following the premiere of the video this week. Kiesza’s Hideaway is a re-entry at Number 37 and Maroon 5’s It Was Always You climbs 11 places to Number 40.
