Naughty Boy and Sam Smith smash 1 million UK sales with La La La
La La La has broken through the million copies sales barrier to become the UK’s 148th million selling single. Plus: the UK's biggest selling singles of all time revealed!
According to the Official Charts Company’s sales data, Naughty Boy and Sam Smith’s La La La has now become one of the biggest selling singles in British history, smashing though one million UK sales. La La La is only the 148th track to reach this sales milestone since the Official Singles Chart began in November, 1952.
Released in May of last year, La La La knocked Daft Punk’s Get Lucky off Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart, scoring the pair their first chart topping single.
Naughty Boy (real name Shahid Khan) helped launch the career of Emeli Sande. The 29-year-old from Watford produced her 2012 breakthrough album, Our Version Of Events, which has sold over 2.1 million copies in the UK.
After topping the Official Singles Chart with La La La, Sam Smith went on to win the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s ceremony, and also topped the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 Poll. He has since had two more Number 1 singles (Money On My Mind and Stay With Me), while his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, is currently Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.
"As a musician or artist to be remembered in the history of UK music is nothing but an honour and privilege," Naughty Boy told OfficialCharts.com. "I would like to thank Sam Smith and everyone involved in making this record a success."
“The fact that La La La has sold so many copies and broken so many boundaries is unbelievable,” says Sam Smith. “I was actually really worried about releasing that track because I didn’t want to be known as a featured artist. I couldn’t have been more wrong! “
“Congratulations to both Naughty Boy and Sam Smith on La La La becoming one of the UK’s biggest selling singles of all-time,” comments Martin Talbot, Chief Executive of the Official Charts Company. “It’s a fantastic achievement, and sees these young British stars rubbing shoulders with other Great Britons such as Sir Elton John, The Beatles and Queen in the Million Sellers Club.”
La La La is joined in the Million Sellers’ Club today by two other recent hits: Pitbull’s 2011 Number 1, Give Me Everything FT Ne-yo, Afrojack and Nayer, and Katy Perry’s 2010 Number 3 hit, Firework, which both also tipped over a million UK sales in recent weeks.
Elton John’s Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind ’97 remains the UK’s biggest selling single of all time with 4.92 million sales to its name. Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas is in second place with 3.75 million sales, followed by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody (2.44 million sales). The Top 5 is completed by Wings’ Mull Of Kintyre / Girls’ School (2.08 million sales) and John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s You’re The One That I Want (2.05 million sales).
