Folky rockers Mumford & Sons are en route back to the top of the Official Albums Chart this weekend following their Glastonbury headline slot.
BRIT Award winner Tom Odell’s short reign at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart with Long Way Down looks like it could be over. The British public have instead been pulling on their tweed waistcoats this week as Glastonbury headliners Mumford & Sons dominate today’s Official Chart Update with no less than TWO albums in the Top 10, and their most recent release, Babel, on course to make a triumphant return to the top spot.
In the race to Number 1, Mumford & Sons are just ahead of Canada’s king of easy listening, Michael Bublé, at this midway stage after closing last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival 2013 with their rousing Sunday night Pyramid stage slot, but this could all change when the Official Albums Chart is announced on Sunday. There are just over 1,000 copies separating the Surrey four-piece’s Babel – which has spent two non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 since its release in 2012 – and Bublé’s To Be Loved, which spent two weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart earlier this year.
Mumford & Sons are enjoying a boost over on the Official Singles Chart too, with six of their tracks featuring in the Top 200 midweek.
Tom Odell falls two places to Number 3 with former chart-topper Long Way Down, while Editors are on course with their fourth Top 5 album – The Weight Of Your Love looks set to enter today’s Update at Number 4. Jake Bugg’s self-titled album, a non-mover, makes up the Top 5.
New Entries and High Climbers
Aside from Editors’ The Weight Of Your Love (Number 4), there are two other new entries on this week’s Official Albums Chart Update. Irish group Duckworth Lewis Method, fronted by The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon, look set for their second Top 40 album, with Sticky Wickets entering at 24. American rock duo Deap Vally score their first Top 40 hit – their debut album Sistrionix is new at 26.
Glastonbury’s influence has led to some massive climbers on this week’s Official Albums Chart Update. Just outside the Top 40, Chase & Status’ No More Idols rockets 131 places to 41. Inside the Top 40, The xx’s Coexist jumps 63 places to Number 33, Icelandic group Of Monsters and Men leap 48 places to Number 23 with My Head Is An Animal and Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More returns to the Top 10, rising 28 places to Number 9.
Rolling Stones’ Glastonbury debut has paid off – greatest hits collection GRRR! climbs 31 places to 18. Arctic Monkeys’ return as headliners sees their three albums all make big gains in today’s Update. Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not is up 16 places to Number 16, Favourite Worst Nightmare climbs 27 places to 35, and Suck It And See rockets 44 places to Number 40.
