Mimi Webb makes Christmas Number 1 bid with Back Home for Christmas: "It'd be a dream come true!"

Mariah Carey's given us the green light and we've already scoffed our way through multiple selection boxes, which can mean only one thing. Christmas Number 1 season is nigh, people.

And it seems we already have an early contender in this year's race, as Mimi Webb releases her brand-new original festive track Back Home for Christmas.

Wrapping up a successful year, which saw her claim a Top 5 album with Amelia, perform shows across the globe and bag a BRIT Awards Best New Artist nomination, Mimi's ready to ring in the holiday season with her very own Christmas bop.

To celebrate, we got Mimi on the blower to talk her chances of claiming that coveted Christmas Number 1.

Mimi! Back Home for Christmas has truly kickstarted the festive season. Nothing like starting early, eh?

Five weeks till Christmas, I’m jumping in early! I had my decorations up by this time last year, to be fair. I’m really happy with when I’ve released this. You always need a song to put you into the Christmas spirit early and get things going. I’m so excited.

Talk to us about the track. How did it come about?

I really felt like this year was the year [to release my own Christmas song]. I wanted it to be something that really describes me and my character. It’s such a fun song, I think people will really get to see the fun in this one!

I recorded it earlier this month. I’d just got back from LA, so as soon as I hit the cold weather in London I was like ‘right, I need to get this going!'

It wasn’t originally written as a Christmas song; it was your typical pop song. We thought ‘let’s go in and put these Christmas lyrics over it.’ I just felt like it was the perfect song to bring the Christmas vibe to. It was so much fun to write and record. I just knew this would be my Christmas song.

What a way to end such a big year, too...

It’s amazing to end this year with a bit of a surprise. I don’t think the fans saw it coming; it feels like the perfect away to end 2023. It’s great to get Back Home for Christmas out before I go into this new era.

How would you feel if you managed to bag 2023's coveted Christmas Number 1 spot?

Oh my gosh. I’d honestly end the year the happiest girl if it happened. I’ve been missing the whole process of releasing so much; getting music out there, seeing what people think of the songs and waiting to see where it’s landed in the charts. 

That’d be a dream come true, to wake up one morning with a Christmas Number 1. I’m manifesting it! Though anything would be incredible – we’ll see what happens. Let’s get this going!

Back Home for Christmas could become one of those staple Christmas classics (hello, royalties!) What are your top 3 festive favourites?

I love Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea – literally, as I drive home from London, I’m always singing along.

Of course, queen Mariah Carey with All I Want for Christmas is You and I just love the whole Michael Bublé Christmas album. That’s such a classic. On Christmas morning, that’s on repeat in my house.

Is it funny to think Back Home for Christmas will be the soundtrack to so many family Christmases, too?

That’s so crazy to me. Even my family are like ‘we’re going to have it on repeat!’ It’ll be so surreal.
