The Official Charts caught up with the Military Wives and their choir master, Gareth Malone, at HMV’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street this morning (Tuesday, December 20) to let them know they might be this year’s Official Christmas Number 1.
Official Charts Company's managing director, Martin Talbot, revealed that the Military Wives’ track, ‘Wherever You Are’, had overtaken X Factor winners Little Mix's 'Cannonball' to become the fastest selling single of 2011 after shifting over 242,000 in its first two days of sale.
While the race to be the 2011 Official Christmas Number 1 is far from over, whoever tops the Official Singles Chart on Christmas Day will be the first recipients of the Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award, which was unveiled yesterday by Olly Murs, Professor Green, Emeli Sande and The Wanted.
“It’s just another day at the office; I turned up at HMV with my choir, sang a few songs and then a man from the Official Charts turned up with an award that we may, may well win,” explained Gareth. "It’s the first time this award has been given out and it’s the 60th Christmas Number 1. This is potentially an amazing achievement for us. ”
