Michael Bublé sends Christmas back to Official Albums Chart summit for sixth non-consecutive week
Michael Bublé takes Christmas to the top of the Official Albums Chart once again, earning the record its sixth non-consecutive week at Number 1.
Bublé’s seasonal staple first reached the summit on its release in November 2011, returning to the top for two weeks in December that same year, before rebounding to Number 1 again in January 2021 and December 2022.
Christmas houses five of the Official Top 40 biggest Christmas songs of the 21st century; It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Holly Jolly Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and The Puppini Sisters collaboration Jingle Bells. Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) climbs one this week to Number 2. The former chart-topper, which claims the feat of 2023’s bigest opening week for an album, holds position in the Top 5 for a ninth consecutive week; refusing to slip lower than Number 4 since its release in November.
A flurry of hits compilations lift into the Top 5 this week; The Weeknd’s The Highlights is up six (3), Elton John’s 2017 collection Diamonds rises eight (4) and ABBA’s chart mainstay Gold: Greatest Hits ascends ten back into the Top 5 for the first time since September 2021 (5).
Outside the Top 10, other collections experiencing uplift this week include Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 debut SOUR (12), and Fleetwood Mac’s 2018 50 Years – Don’t Stop (13), both rising ten.
Bing Crosby’s festive compilation Christmas Classics reaches a brand-new best today at Number 18, breaking the Top 20 for the first time since its release; the LP previously peaked at Number 27 in January of this year. Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song also claims a new peak this week as it enters the Top 40 for the first time ever, finishing at Number 22.
Following WHAM!’s Christmas Number 1 success with Last Christmas, the late George Michael’s 2006 hits collection Twenty Five returns to the Top 40 (23), as does Michael Jackson’s The Essential (26).
Ed Sheeran sees two former chart-topping albums rebound into the Top 40 this week; = (Equals) (35) and ÷ (Divide) (36). Finally, Mariah Carey’s 1994 collection Merry Christmas soars into the Top 40 for the second time this year (40).
