Mercury Prize 2014 winners Young Fathers set to make Top 40 debut
Sales of the hip-hop trio’s debut album have almost doubled since winning the Barclaycard Mercury Prize earlier this week.
Young Fathers are headed for the Top 40 on this week’s Official Albums Chart with Dead following their win at this year’s Mercury Prize.
The Scottish hip-hop group, who were named winners of the prestigious award earlier this week (October 29), have shot to Number 47 in the latest sales flash – marking the record’s first entry in the Top 100.
Sales of Dead – released in February this year - have increased a massive 2,481% compared to the week prior to the ceremony; while the record’s total sales have almost doubled since they were announced as the winners just days ago. If the momentum continues, the LP is likely to enter the Top 40 on Sunday's Official Albums Chart.
"We'll take it in our stride," said band member Graham 'G' Hastings after their win. "We always wanted to make something bigger than the city we were living in."
Meanwhile, chair of this year’s Mercury Prize judging panel, Simon Frith, put the band’s victory down to their “unique take on urban British music, brimming with ideas - forceful, unexpected and moving.”
Last year's winner James Blake saw a sales boost of 18% 24 hours after picking up last year's prize for his second album Overgrown.
