Maroon 5 took on their biggest (and possibly most controversial) gig yet last night as they performed this year's Super Bowl half-time show.

A marching band, drones, comets and Spongebob Squareparts all featured in the 13-minute performance alongside their biggest hits, including She Will Be Loved, Sugar, Moves Like Jagger and recent hit Girls Like You.

They were joined by rapper Travis Scott and Atlanta-born Big Boi, formerly of Outkast, who performed Kryptonite and I Like The Way You Move.

Spongebob briefly featured after fans petitioned for the character's song Sweet Victory to be played in tribute to its creator Stephen Hillenburg, who died of ALS last November. However, rather than performing the track, Spongebob introduced Travis Scott's section.

Why was Maroon 5's performance controversial?

The band's announcement that they would perform at this year's Super Bowl was met with controversy, with calls for them to pull out because of the NFL's stance over some players refusing to stand when the US national anthem is played in protest against the treatment of black people in America.

After President Trump called for players who "disrespect" the US flag to be sacked, the NFL announced it would instead fine players who kneel for the national anthem. In response, this year's Super Bowl performers are making a joint donation with the NFL of $500,000 (£389k) to a social justice cause.

In an interview with People, Maroon 5’s keyboardist PJ Morton defended their decision to play the show. "I think there are plenty of people - a lot of the players, to be honest - who support Kap and also do their job for the NFL," he said.

"I think we’re doing the same thing. We can support being against police brutality against black and brown people and be in support of being able to peacefully protest and still do our jobs.

"You can get bogged down by those things, we’re not focusing on the negative now. We’re blocking out the noise. We’re just doing what we do. We look to have a good time."
