Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee are heading for the top spot on this week’s Official Singles Chart with their latest track Despacito.

Despacito, which translates to 'Slowly', made a massive climb on last week’s Top 40 to Number 4 following the release of a new mix featuring Justin Bieber. As of today’s Official Chart Update (May 8), the song has overtaken last week’s Number 1 single, DJ Khaled’s I’m The One, with a narrow lead of 1,300 chart equivalent sales at the halfway stage.

Should Despacito keep its place at the top on Friday’s Official Chart reveal, it’ll be the first foreign language single to reach Number 1 in the UK since Psy’s Gangnam Style logged one week at the top in September 2012. The last song featuring Spanish to hit the summit was Sak Noel’s Loca People in 2011.

Despacito collaborator Daddy Yankee previously reached the top tier on the Official Singles Chart with 2005’s Gasolina, which peaked at Number 5.

The original version of Despacito has been a hit across the world since its release back in January, topping the charts in over 20 countries.

Behind DJ Khaled’s I’m The One (2), Clean Bandit’s Symphony ft. Zara Larsson slips to 3, Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You is at 4, and Shawn Mendes’ There Nothing Holdin’ Me Back climbs two places to 5.

New entries and high climbers

Niall Horan’s brand new single Slow Hands – the follow-up to his Top 10 solo debut single This Town – opens at Number 12 on today’s update, and two songs are on the cusp of entering this week’s Top 20 for the first time: Disciples’ On My Mind leaps nine spots to 18, and Charlie Puth’s Attention lifts 12 places to 19.

Further down, DJ and producer Jonas Blue is looking good to secure his fourth Top 40 hit this week with new track Mama, which features YouTube star William Singe, and US band Paramore could be re-entering the Top 40 on Friday with Hard Times, currently up three places to 40.

Happy to hear that 'Despacito' should take the #1 spot on Friday; it definitely sounds like it could become a huge summer hit for 2017! Also pleased to see 'There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back' expected to reach the Top 5 too. :)
