Little Mix’s Wings soaring towards Number 1
Little Mix, winners of X Factor 2011, return to the Official Singles Chart this week as second single Wings soars towards the Number 1 spot.
Having captured the hearts and minds of the nation throughout the series with their winning chemistry, cool musical sensibility and undeniable vocal skills, the girls shot straight to Number 1 last December with debut single, Cannonball, and now it looks like follow-up single Wings is heading for the top spot too. Wings is currently outselling its closest rival, last week’s chart topper Sam & The Womp’s Bom Bom (2) by more than two copies to one.
The first of their original material since winning the reality TV contest eight months ago, Wings is a bold slice of feel-good soul and r’n’b-flavoured pop. Wings is produced by British hitmakers TMS (Professor Green – Read All About It, Dappy – No Regrets) and co-written by Little Mix themselves.
The girls, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, who all auditioned as solo singers last year, were put together as a girl group during the series by judge and mentor Tulisa.
New entries and high climbers
N-Dubz man Fazer is no doubt looking to follow in the footsteps of his fellow bandmates’ Dappy and Tulisa’s chart-topping solo success with his debut solo single, Killer. The Camden rapper / DJ / producer spoke to Metro about his new material “I’m not just a rapper. Records that I am doing are a game changer. They are completely leftfield. There’s nothing out there like that.” Killer is currently riding at Number 12 midweek.
The only other Top 40 new entry today is Steve Aoki and Angger Dimas FT Iggy Azalea’s Beat Down at Number 36.
The week’s highest climber to date comes courtesy of X Factor auditionee Lucy Spraggan, the Sheffield singer/songwriter who made the judging panel giggle on Saturday’s night’s show with her witty lyrics to Last Night (Beer Fear), about the downside to drinking.
Yesterday OfficialCharts.com reported that Spraggan’s self-penned tune was the second most purchased song in the UK this week based on Sunday and Monday sales figures, but has since been pulled from digital retailers “in preparation for some things coming up”, the singer announced on her Facebook page. Last Night (Beer Fear) jumps 65 places week on week to Number 5 on today’s Official Chart Update and should still enter the Official Singles Chart Top 20 this Sunday.
