Lesley Roy's Story Of My Life announced as Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020
Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 has been unveiled.
Singer Lesley Roy will represent Ireland at this year's competition in Rotterdam with her song Story Of My Life.
The Dubliner was selected by TV broadcaster RTÉ and sister radio station 2FM after songwriters and artists were invited to submit songs. Story Of My Life is an inspirational pop track all about embracing your true identity and not caring about what people think of you.
RTÉ have also partnered with respected theatre and events producers THISISPOPBABY on the creative direction for Lesley's staging, a first for the Irish delegation.
"We are extremely excited about Lesley Roy and this year's Irish entry, Story Of My Life," explained Michael Kealy, Head of the Ireland Delegation for Eurovision 2020. "The song is fresh and uplifting, it's a banger, and we are very much looking forward to working with Lesley and THISISPOPBABY in preparation for our performance on the biggest music stage in the world in Rotterdam in May."
Lesley Roy released her debut album Unbeautiful in 2008 via Jive Records, a record that was executive produced by Swedish pop producer Max Martin. Across her career, she's written songs for Adam Lambert and Dutch band Miss Montreal, collaborated with American DJ Deorro and even performed the entrance theme for WWE wrestler Ember Moon.
Ireland hold the record for the most Eurovision wins in history, with seven, and are also the only country to win in three consecutive years. Last year however saw Ireland record their worst performance in history; Sarah McTernan failed to qualify for the Grand Final with her song 22, finishing last place in her semi-final heat.
2020 marks 50 years since Dana won for Ireland in 1970 when the contest was hosted in Amsterdam - can Lesley put in a strong performance on the leaderboard now that Eurovision is hosted by The Netherlands once again?
Lesley Roy will perform Story Of My Life in the first Semi-Final on Tuesday May 12. The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final takes place on Saturday May 16.
