Lady Gaga announces Joker: Folie à Deux companion album Harlequin

It's coming on 27 September.

Lady Gaga has well and truly blindsided us by announcing the release of a new album in just three days' time. Yes, really.

In an Instagram post, Gaga described the LP, which is titled Harlequin, as a "companion album" to her upcoming movie Joker: Folie à Deux. The title is a nod to her character in the film, Harley Quinn, who is a deeply twisted and manipulative associate of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.

The album will drop this Friday, 27 September, a week before the film opens in UK and US cinemas on 4 October.

The Instagram post also includes a photo of a milk carton containing what look like track titles from the album. Some of these – That's Life, That's Entertainment and Oh, When the Saints – point to the album including a number of cover versions.

MORE: Everything we know about Lady Gaga's LG7 so far

Mother Monster is certainly keeping busy – and fans on their toes. Earlier this month she appeared to reveal that the first single from her next studio album will be released in October. This suggests Harlequin is an entirely separate project from LG7, her follow-up to 2020's Chromatica, which became her fourth to reach Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.

Meanwhile, Gaga is already riding high on the Singles Chart with her Bruno Mars duet Die With A Smile, which has spent five weeks in the Top 10 with a peak so far of Number 5.

At this point, it's probably best to expect the unexpected. But there's one thing we do know for sure: we're going to be seeing a lot of Lady Gaga in the coming months.
