Katy Perry roars ahead in race to Number 1
Roar is set to become one of the fastest selling singles of 2013 and give Katy Perry her fourth Number 1 UK single this weekend!
She changes her mind like a girl changes clothes, but Katy Perry’s decision to bring the release date of her latest single, Roar, forward by a week seems to be paying off: The California gurl is on course for her fourth Number 1 single this weekend, and a huge one at that!
According to the latest Official Charts Company sales data, nearly 103,000 copies of Roar have been purchased in the UK up to midnight last night. If its momentum continues, Katy not only looks set to top the Official Singles Chart on Sunday, but Roar could become one of the fastest selling singles of 2013 so far. Avicii’s Wake Me Up currently holds the title after shifting more than 266,000 copies in its first week on sale in July, while Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines FT TI and Pharrell Williams sold nearly 191,000 copies, week one, back in May.
Roar is the first track to be lifted from Katy’s upcoming studio album, Prism, which is released in the UK on October 21. Her last album, 2010’s Teenage Dream (including the deluxe edition, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection), set a new Official Chart record for the most amount of Top 10 singles from one studio album by a female solo artist. Her peers, Lady Gaga and Jessie J, are joint second with six Top 10s each from their debut albums, The Fame and Who You Are.
Back to this week’s Official Singles Chart Update: After three weeks on top, Ellie Goulding slides one place with Burn (Number 2). Avicii’s Wake Me Up (3), Klangkarussell’s Sonnentanz (Sun Don't Shine) FT Will Heard (4) and the Cedric Gervais remix of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness (5) complete today’s Top 5.
New Entries and High Climbers
In addition to Katy Perry’s Roar (Number 1) there are three other new entries on this week’s Official Singles Chart Update Top 40.
The UK’s newest girl band, Neon Jungle, look set to make their Top 10 single this weekend. The four-piece (Amira, 17, Asami, 17, Jess, 20, and Shereen, 16) are at Number 10 on today’s Update with their debut single, Trouble.
Despite being released more than 24 hours later than the rest of this week’s new entries, You Me At Six are set to chart one place behind Neon Jungle with Lived A Lie (11). The track, which went on sale yesterday after receiving its first official play on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show, is taken from the Surrey rockers’ fourth album Cavalier Youth. London Grammar are on course for their second Top 40 hit this weekend with Strong, which is new in at Number 17.
After kicking off its tenth series over the weekend, the X Factor is already starting to impact the Official Singles Chart. Prison officer Sam Bailey’s performance of Beyonce’s Listen on Saturday’s opening show has helped propel the original up 52 places to Number 14. Meanwhile, Emeli Sande’s Read All About Part 3 also climbs 52 places to Number 25 following 17-year-old student Hannah Barrett’s rendition of the track on the show.
And finally, Olly Murs’ Right Place Right Time is once again teetering just inside the Top 40 with Right Place Right Time (39). If the title track of his latest album can hold on, it will be Olly’s tenth Top 40 hit to date.
