Janet Jackson has announced the release of a self-titled, four-hour documentary set to air next year.

Janet, which has been in the works for the past five years, was largely filmed around the time of the death of Jackson's father Joe in 2018. Using archival footage, the series will also draw on moments such as the death of Janet's brother Michael Jackson in 2009 too.

Launching in January 2022, Janet. coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of Janet's self-titled debut album.

“This is my story, told by me. Not through someone else’s eyes,” Jackson says in the trailer. “This is the truth. Take it or leave it. Love it or hate it. This is me.”

Janet Jackson's self-titled debut album was released in September 1982, but it wasn't until 1985's Control that she really came into her own, teaming up with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who would go on to oversee the bulk of her back catalogue.

Her last album, 2015's Unbreakable, was her first release since the death of her brother Michael in 2009. 2020 was due to see the launch of a new worldwide tour and album of the same name, Black Diamond, but plans were cancelled due to the pandemic.

Janet is an enviable hitmaking legacy in the US (The Weeknd recently tied an American chart record with Janet) with a total of 10 Number 1 singles and seven number 1 albums.

In the UK, Janet Jackson has accrued 38 UK Top 40 singles including 17 UK Top 10s, and six Top 10s on the Official Albums Chart to date, including a Number 1 with 1993's Janet.
