James Corden will host the 59th annual Grammy Awards, set to air February 12, 2017 at 8 pm ET on CBS, it has been announced.

The TV host and comedian, who currently presents The Late Late Show in America, takes over from LL Cool J, who has been at the ceremony's helm for five years.

"I am truly honored to be hosting the Grammys next year," Corden said. "It's the biggest, most prestigious award show in music and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible night."

As well as hosting the 70th Tony Awards earlier this year, James has also presented the BRIT Awards five times, alongside Kylie Minogue and Matthew Horne in 2009 and solo between 2011-2014.

The star has been a huge hit on The Late Late Show, thanks to his breakout segment Carpool Karaoke, which has seen the likes of Adele, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder riding shotgun with him and belting out their classic hits.

Britney Spears donned her iconic schoolgirl outfit (well, sort of) for James Corden's Carpool Karaoke. The pair belted out her classic hits Oops! I Did It Again, Toxic, new single Make Me and, of course, Baby One More Time. Watch it back in full here

The format has been so successful that Apple Music recently bought a series based on it this summer.

"Thanks to Carpool Karaoke, we've all been on some incredible rides with James," said Neil Portnow, chief executive of the Recording Academy, which arranges the Grammys.

"He's got big shoes to fill after the magnificent run we had with LL Cool J, but James Corden is a commanding, dynamic showman who, we believe, is perfect to host the Grammy Awards."

Meghan Trainor will announce the nominees for this year's four main categories - record of the year, song of the year, album of the year and best new artist - live on US TV show This Morning on December 6. The remaining 80 categories will be revealed on social media immediately afterwards.

David Bowie, Drake and Beyonce are expected to bag multiple nominations at next year's bash, while Frank Ocean deliberately refused to submit his songs for Grammy consideration, claiming the awards overlooked black artists in the album of the year category.

The winners of the 2017 Grammy Awards will be revealed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday 12 February.
