James Blunt vows to legally change his name if Back to Bedlam returns to Number 1
No one could accuse James Blunt of lacking a sense of humour – especially when it comes to himself. Just check out his X feed.
Now, the self-deprecating singer-songwriter has taken the lols to the next level by vowing to change his name – legally change his name – if his latest release hits Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.
He posted on X and Instagram: "Wanna ruin my life? If the 20th Anniversary Edition of my album Back to Bedlam re-enters the charts at Number 1, I will legally change my name – to whatever you guys decide."

He also invited fans to make suggestions for his new legal name by leaving replies on X and comments on Instagram. "The comment with the most likes on this post across my social media profiles on 11th October – when the album is released – wins," he wrote.
Consider the gauntlet thrown down. But remember, he'll only change his name if the anniversary album makes it to Number 1 after it's released on 11 October.
James Blunt's Back to Bedlam album originally came out in March 2025 and became an Official Charts blockbuster that spent 10 weeks at Number 1. It remains one of the UK's bestselling albums of all time.
It's home to the Number 1 single You're Beautiful and the further Official Singles Chart hits Goodbye My Lover (Number 9), High (Number 16) and Wisemen (Number 23).
To date, James Blunt scored two Number 1 albums – Back to Bedlam and 2007's All the Lost Souls – and sent another six into the Top 10.
Now, what should he change his name to if he hits the top spot again?
