Sales of The Weather Girls’ classic are still going strong as UK music fans continue to protest against former UKIP councillor’s comments on gay marriage.

It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls is on course to re-enter the Official Singles Chart this weekend.

The US duo’s 1984 Number 2 hit has blown back into the midweek Top 40 following a Facebook campaign to get it to Number 1 as music fans respond to Henley-On-Thames councillor David Silvester’s comments on gay marriage.

Silvester, who was a member of UKIP until he was suspended following his remarks, blamed the UK’s recent floods on the government’s same sex marriage legislation.

“This happened in the Old Testament,” he wrote in an open letter to Prime Minister David Cameron, which was published in The Henley Standard newspaper. “They were warned if they turned against God there would be pestilence, there would be war, there would be disasters."

It’s Raining Men, which later became a Number 1 hit for Geri Halliwell, has long been considered a gay anthem.

“We thought it fitted all the better based on the UKIP councillor's comments,” Darren Pop, one of the Facebook campaign’s organisers told OfficialCharts.com. “We believe that the show of strength to get a song to Number 1 will create a huge spotlight on our campaign for equality as a whole.”

The track currently is at Number 21 on today’s Official Singles Chart Update.

In related news, Jeremy Joseph, founder of the G-A-Y nightclub, has offered to make a substantial donation to Sir Elton John’s AIDS Foundation should It’s Raining Men break into the Top 20 on Sunday.

The Official Albums Chart Update Top 40 is as follows. The Official Albums Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here, on Sunday at 7pm.
