Heatwave to sweep Wiley towards first solo Number 1 single?
East London grime star Wiley is riding high in today’s Official Singles Chart Update as new summer scorcher Heatwave cruises ahead of Calvin Harris FT Example.
Heatwave, the sunshine-friendly anthem, produced by Rymez, features a huge pop hook from guest vocalist Ms D (who featured on Chipmunk’s chart-topping hit Oopsy Daisy), looks likely to secure the 'King Of Grime' his first solo Number 1 here in the UK. Wiley’s previous highest solo chart position came courtesy of 2008’s Wearing My Rolex, which peaked at Number 2.
33 year old Wiley also found success as founder member and leader of the Roll Deep collective, scoring two Number 1 singles in 2010 with Good Times and Green Light.
Heatwave takes the lead midweek by 2,500 copies ahead of Calvin Harris FT Example’s We’ll Be Coming Back (2).
New entries and climbers
A total of four new entries make an appearance inside today’s Official Chart Update Top 40. Led by Wiley’s Heatwave (1) and Calvin Harris FT Example’s new offering We’ll Be Coming Back (2), the opening track from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album Everybody’s On The Run is on course to enter at Number 35 just as the ex-Oasis man is due to kick off his UK tour next month, while Through The Night by Drumsound & Bassline Smith is new in at Number 37.
Olympics opening ceremony
And finally, the Olympic effect continues to take hold as stars of Friday night’s triumphant London 2012 opening ceremony make further huge climbs since the weekend.
First up, the event’s musical directors Underworld look set to scoop their first Top 10 hit in over 16 years, as Caliban’s Dream – the track penned by the electronic group’s Rick Smith for the Isles Of Wonder ceremony, shoots up 62 places to Number 7 today. If they can maintain this performance through to Sunday, it will give Underworld their second ever Top 10 hit, and their first since the Born Slippy remix reached Number 2 in 1996 – which was, of course, also the soundtrack to another of Danny Boyle’s iconic pieces of work, the film Trainspotting.
Meanwhile, Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys’ cover of The Beatles’ Come Together climbs 48 places to break into the Top 20 (19), and Frank Turner’s I Still Believe jumps 67 places to Number 30. The week’s highest climber comes courtesy of Emeli Sande, whose Abide With Me, as performed at the ceremony, catapults a massive 148 places skyward to Number 32.
