Godspeed You! Black Emperor score Official Record Store Chart Number 1
Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! was the most purchased album in the nation’s independent record stores last week.
The Canadian post-rockers’ fought off tough competition from 18-year-old Nottingham singer / songwriter Jake Bugg (whose eponymous debut album topped the Official Albums Chart on Sunday) to take the top spot.
The Official Record Store Chart was launched in April of this year by the Official Charts Company and the organizers of Record Store Day UK to reflect sales of the UK’S coolest and most vibrant independent record shops.
Bat For Lashes are this week’s second highest new entry as The Haunted Man debuts at Number 3. Mumford And Sons’ Babel drops one place to Number 4, and the Top 5 is completed by psychedelic rockers Tame Impla who are at Number 5 with their second album, Lonerism.
New Entries
In addition to Jake Bugg (Number 2) and Bat For Lashes (3) there are 13 other new entries on this week’s Official Record Store Chart Top 40.
Bellowhead, the eleven-piece English contemporary folk band, enter at Number 6 with their forth studio album, Broadside. Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagan is ne win at Number 10 with Sunken Condos, while Manchester-based ska/punk/hip-hop/mash-up group Sonic Boom Six enter the chart at Number 11 with their self-titled, fourth studio album.
Jim Jones Revue are at Number 15 with The Savage Heart, and Diana Krall enters at Number 17 with her new record Glad Rag Doll. Martha Wainwright debuts at Number 24 with her third album, Come Home To Mama, and Art Garfunkel’s new compilation album, The Singer, is at 27.
The vinyl re-issues of Iron Maiden’s classic ‘80s albums Iron Maiden and Killers debut at 30 and 31, respectively, while Leona Lewis’ Glassheart is new in at Number 32.
This week’s new entries are completed by Friar Alessandro’s Voice From Assisi (34), Pet Shop Boys’ Elysium (36) and Canadian punks Metz’ self-titled debut (40).
