Gayle and Adele battling for Number 1 this Friday with abcdefu and Easy On Me

Plus, viral sensation Lauren Spencer-Smith could make a very impressive UK Top 40 debut with Fingers Crossed.

17 year old rising pop star Gayle is currently battling with Adele for dominance on the Official Singles Chart this Friday, as abcdefu and Easy On Me enter a two-way race for Number 1. Currently, less than 1,000 chart sales separate the tracks in our First Look Update, with Gayle leading the pack.

Abcdefu would be Gayle’s first-ever UK Number 1 single, while Easy On Me is challenging for a ninth non-consecutive week at Number 1, which would extend its record as Adele’s longest-running UK Number 1 single. Find out more about Gayle and her viral hit here.

Meanwhile, you may not recognise the name Lauren Spencer-Smith, but the 18 year old former American Idol contestant has set TikTok and social media alight with her new breakup anthem. Fingers Crossed is currently tracking to rise to Number 3 this Friday, it would be Lauren Spencer-Smith’s first-ever UK Top 10 chart entry.

Last week saw The Weeknd unveil his new album Dawn FM in a semi-surprise drop, and three of its tracks are eyeing up entries in the Top 20 following its release. Leading the charge is new single Sacrifice, which looks set to be the chart’s highest new entry at Number 6, while lead single Take My Breath could break back into the Top 10 at Number 7 and Swedish House Mafia collaboration How Do I Make You Love Me? Could debut at Number 15.

Finally, Lost Frequencies and Calum Scott’s slow-burning hit Where Are You Now? Continues its recent upwards trajectory in the Top 40 - it’s currently set to vault up four places to a new peak of Number 19 and break into the Top 20 for the first time since its release last year.

The Official Singles Chart Top 100 is revealed on OfficialCharts.com every Friday at 5.45pm. Follow the Top 40 countdown live on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart show with Scott Mills.

10 ways to improve Radio 1 Charts from 2022

there is a few ways to improve the Radio 1 Singles Charts

1) Better Time Broadcast - Prime Time From 6am to 10am rather than 4pm to boast more million listeners

2) Repeat show/eposide on other date too

3) Connect/Eposide share with Radio 2 - the UK most listen to station

4) advertise more on tv and radio with a highlight

5) show charts on bbc tv on evening on a mainstream channel like bbc 1 or bbc 2 From 19:00 - 22:00

6) Bring back the Top 10 live section watch online at the same as radio. like it did like 9 years ago

7) Charts needs to be around 90mins, maybe 40-31 Highlights and Top 20 complete, with Top 20 Albums reading not Just Top 5.

8) Scrap ACR Ratio, Scrap Week Ending Dates to fit better for real

results and date by sales and units than week tracking

9) Promo new songs, new christmas songs, and indie artist and small label new releases weekly to try and chart

10) only one version of song applys, mainly clean edit, for Charts for
Singles (Just keep one version), scrap adds-ons, or other versions, for
fareness for songs and artist who only have one version only (dont add!
versions together)

I feel like Lauren may fall a bit by friday, I'm guessing she'll land between #4-#7!

I hope GAYLE can hold at #1 because we need something new, other than Adele, Ed or Elton at #1!

I honestly think ‘Fingers Crossed’ is going to #1 on Friday given how well it’s performing on streaming. :)

Dropped a touch but think anything is possible this week again as it did last week.

Adele's track is very boring, but Gayle's song is even worse. Not a great time for music.

I'm glad my fave from the album (How Do I Make You Love Me?) Is charting too, but I feel it could get pushed out by the Lil Wayne track since that is gonna be pushed as a single from the 11th of January!

‘How Do I Make You Love Me?’ & ‘Less Than Zero’ are both huge growers for me, although ‘I Heard You’re Married’ wouldn’t be a bad single choice either, haha. :)

Hope it can stay there by Friday and retail therapy can join it 😍

Piran

I think ‘Retail Therapy’ will be Top 40, although I haven’t even checked out the song yet! :P

I think it will go top 20, look at what obsessed with you did, wasn't even here on Sunday and top 10 on monday

avatar

Piran

1

‘Obsessed With You’ probably got an ACR reset with all the other songs last week, hence the unexpected climb for it, but ‘Retail Therapy’ is obviously a new song & the same thing won’t happen this time!

That being said, given that it’s a UK rap song, its chart position could be boosted as we get more streaming data. :)

Hoping it can get higher, just one of those tracks that I haven't tired of yet and that takes some doing!

Me too, I was going on about it at the beginning of November!

I’ve been a fan of that song since last September when it started climbing the European charts, haha. :)

avatar

Piran

I could see it having a similar chart run to what ‘My Heart Goes [La Di Da]’ did. :)

"The same thing won't happen this time" Travis Scott got 3 #1s in a year Central cee can get 3 top 20 singles

I didn’t say that ‘Retail Therapy’ wouldn’t go Top 20 this week, I said that it wouldn’t climb massively from where it tonight, that’s all. :)
