Gangnam Style to finally conquer the UK’s Official Chart?
After weeks of ascent, it looks like K-pop YouTube phenomenon Psy’s Gangnam Style could finally be on course to snatch the UK’s Official Singles Chart top spot this Sunday.
Fresh from topping music charts across the globe, including the Billboard Chart in the US, Korean YouTube phenomenon Psy may this week, at long last, finally conquer the UK’s Official Singles Chart Number 1, Gangnam style!
Gangnam Style is the YouTube global phenomenon which has amassed over 283 million views in just two months and has become the most ‘liked’ video of all time on the online video platform.
The K-pop singer has climbed and climbed the UK’s Official Singles Chart Top 200 over the past five weeks, and following a sales surge last week journeyed all the way to Number 3, before being held off by reigning chart toppers The Script FT Will.I.Am’s Hall Of Fame and Example. As of today’s Official Chart Update, the UK could experience its first ever K-pop Number 1 this Sunday as Gangnam Style leads this week’s singles race by a cool 6,000 copies.
The Script are set to bump down one place to Number 2, while Flo Rida climbs six places to Number 3 with I Cry. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is the Taylor Swift track that topped the Official Streaming Chart earlier this month and its popularity shows little sign of waning as Swift continues her singles ascent too, up two places this week to Number 4. The Top 5 is completed by Ne-Yo’s Let Me Love You.
New Entries
Today’s highest new entry comes courtesy of DJ Fresh FT Ravaughn. The Feeling (11) is the fourth single taken from the DJ and producer’s forthcoming debut album Nextlevelism. The album is set to feature his two previous Number 1 singles, Louder and Hot Right Now. Paloma Faith’s latest offering Never Tear Us Apart is today’s Number 13 and the only other new entry in the Official Chart Update Top 40.
Thanks to X Factor contestant Kye Sones’ boot camp performance, which received a standing ovation from the crowd, four different versions of Bonnie Raitt’s 1991 song I Can’t Make You Love Me, are set to make an appearance in the Top 200 this weekend. The Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin-penned song is currently enjoying four individual entries today - Adele’s version of the track is at Number 42, George Michael (71), Bonnie Raitt’s original at Number 101, and Bon Iver’s cover at 154. Jason Mraz is the week’s highest climber so far with I Won’t Give Up, also performed on X Factor last weekend.
Further down outside of the Top 40, Deputy PM Nick Clegg is on course to enter the Official Singles Chart this weekend at Number 69. Satire website thepoke’s autotune remix of Clegg’s public apology for his party’s U-turn on tuition fees amassed much media attention, and was subsequently made available as a charity download – with Clegg’s blessing - with proceeds going to Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
The single I'm Sorry (The Autotune remix) was released late last week on Friday, racking up enough sales to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 200 (Number 143) before the chart week cut-off point of midnight on Saturday. Based on Official Charts Company sales figures today, the spoof track has since surged 74 places and is currently on course to break into the Top 75 this week at Number 69.
