Gangnam Style star Psy collects his Official Number 1 Award

Scott Mills presented Gangnam Style star Psy with his Official Number 1 Award yesterday (November 8) when the K-pop sensation stopped by Radio 1.

South Korean rapper Psy hit Number 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart back in September with his international smash Gangnam Style.

The track, which now has 679 million views on YouTube (and counting!), and accompanying dance routine became a firm favourite with celebrity fans such as Justin Bieber, Simon Cowell and Britney Spears (as well as everybody else on the planet!), knocked The Script FT Will.I.Am’s Hall Of Fame off the top of the Official Singles Chart on September 30.

Psy, who was on tour in the US when he reached Number 1 in the UK, called in on Radio 1 yesterday to chat to Scott Mills, one of the first DJs to back his mega hit. Scott took the opportunity to present Psy with his Official Number 1 Award – the new trophy launched by the Official Charts Company and Radio 1 to recognise each new single that lands the coveted Number 1 spot on the Official Singles Chart.

Psy told Scott he didn't believe how famous he has become in the UK:

"I was shocked," he said. "I didn't believe it, because I don't believe online. So it was only when I came here and experienced it with my own eyes that I believed it."

“People don't realise I have been around for a long time now," Psy added. "This single was on my sixth album. So I have five other dances for my five other albums. I have done the dance with Justin Bieber and Britney but her dress was too tight. She wasn't expecting my appearance. I also heard that Obama can do Gangnam Style."
