Fatboy Slim shows One Direction and The Wanted he’s still got it!
One Direction and The Wanted face tough competition from Fatboy Slim in the race to the top of this week’s Official Singles Chart.
One Direction and The Wanted face tough competition from Fatboy Slim in the race to the top of this week’s Official Singles Chart.
It was set to be an epic battle of the boybands, recalling the ‘90s heyday of Take That and East 17, as One Direction took on The Wanted in the race to this week’s Number 1 single. However, with 13,000 copies currently separating the boybanders, it’s now a surprise tussle to the finish involving veteran superstar DJ Fat Boy Slim (who is already ahead of The Wanted) in second place and snapping at the heels of Harry Styles and co!
Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat. That’s the method 50 year old Fatboy Slim is employing in his bid to deny Harry, Zayn, Niall, Liam and Louis their fourth Official Number 1 single. The Calvin Harris remix of the track which features Riva Starr and Beardyman is poised to become Fatboy Slim’s first Top 10 hit since 2001’s double A-side Star 69 / Weapon Of Choice, and is currently trailing 1D’s Story Of My Life by only 4,000 copies and could still overtake by Sunday if momentum surges further.
Reigning chart topper Lorde is down two places to Number 3 with Royals, while The Wanted are at Number 4 with Show Me Love (America). OneRepublic’s former chart topper, Counting Stars, falls two places to Number 5 to complete today’s Top 5.
New Entries and High Climbers
In addition to One Direction (Number 1), Fat Boy Slim (2) and The Wanted (4) there are seven other new entries on this week’s Official Singles Chart Update.
Foxes is new in today at Number 7 with Youth. The Southampton singer/songwriter previously joined forces with Rudimental for their Top 20 hit Right Here earlier this year. Tinie Tempah is one place behind her with Children Of The Sun FT John Martin (8). Taken from his hotly anticipated new album, Demonstration, which is out on Monday (November 4), Children Of The Sun will be Tinie Tempah’s tenth Top 40 hit and fifth Top 10 as a lead artist.
Meanwhile, after less than 24 hours on sale, Eminem’s and Rihanna’s latest collaboration has shot straight into the Top 10. The Monster is at Number 9 on today’s Official Chart Update. The last time the pair worked together was on 2010’s Love The Way You Lie which went on to become one of the biggest selling singles of all-time, it has sold over a million copies in the UK alone.
Justin Bieber is set to score his fourth Top 40 hit in as many weeks with Recovery (15) while M.A.D. – AKA 16-year-olds Michael Sutthakorn, Aiden Hancock and Dan Lewis – are on course for their first Top 40 single with Toy Boy (30).
Following the death of Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed on Sunday, two of his tracks have entered the Official Singles Chart Update Top 40. Perfect Day is at Number 36, while Walk On The Wild Side is at 39. Walk On The Wild Side was Reed’s first ever UK hit and originally peaked at Number 10 in 1973. Should it maintain its current momentum, this will be the first time the original version of Perfect Day has appeared in the Top 40. A re-recorded version, released in aid of the BBC’s Children In Need, and which featured Lou Reed sharing vocal duties with David Bowie, Bono and Boyzone, among others, reached Number 1 back in 1997.
Lady Gaga climbs 13 places to re-enter the Official Singles Chart Update at Number 37 with Applause, the lead single from her hotly anticipated new album ARTPOP. Gaga has recently made two further cuts from the album available as promotional tracks which are currently exempt from the Official Singles Chart due to rules on instant grat album promotions. (Had it have been chart eligible, Do What U Want FT R. Kelly, which was released last week, would have placed at Number 10 on Sunday, while Venus, which would be at Number 6 on today’s mid-week Update).
The Official Singles Chart Update Top 40 is as follows. The Official Singles Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here, on Sunday at 7pm.
