Fake Friends: PS1's summer smash in waiting gets all-too-real music video - Premiere
Fake Friends by New York DJ/producer PS1 is quickly shaping up to be one of the songs of summer 2020.
Despite on the surface sounding like the kind of rousing piano-house banger you'd expect to soundtrack a Love Island or Ibiza Weekender incidental, it's also acts a caution against the culture those shows have helped create.
Australian singer-songwriter Alex Hosking, who performs on the track, sings about false perceptions and dressing up in "tinsel, botox, perfect smiles", before suggesting with deliberate vacant expression over a blazing bassline on the chorus: "Maybe we can feel like the others... they know how to have fun".
The accompanying music video, premiered below, is something you suspect might be an all too familiar scenario for some: a secretly despondent social media influencer doing it for the 'gram and living only for likes. Watch below:
Fake Friends marks the first UK chart entry for both PS1 and Alex Hosking, currently hovering just outside the Top 100 but climbing quickly. PS1, real name Peter Conigliaro, has built a huge following on the US club circuit, having shared the stage with the likes of David Guetta and Tiesto.
Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Alex hails from Adelaide and has released a string of indie-pop tracks and dance collaborations.
