Ellie Goulding’s River could become her third UK Number 1 single this week

The cover of Joni Mitchell's Christmas folk song could earn Ellie her third UK Number 1 single.

Ellie Goulding’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s River is on course to climb to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart, currently up ten places to 1 on this week's Official Chart: First Look.

Ellie’s version of the track - released in late November - takes the 1971 Christmas folk song into the UK chart for the first time. If it holds on to the top by Friday (Dec. 27), it will earn Ellie her third UK chart-topper, following Burn (2013) and Love Me Like You Do (2015).

Elsewhere in the Top 20, lots of Christmas classics continue to scale the chart: Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You lifts from 8 to 3; Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York jumps from 14 to 6; and Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone is up seven spots to 9.

Further down, Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas (11); John Legend’s Happy Christmas (War Is Over) (13); Elton John’s Step Into Christmas (14); Slade’s Merry Xmas Everyone (16); Leona Lewis’s One More Sleep (19); and Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me (20) are all on the climb this week.

Mariah Carey is the rightful number 1. They’ve messed up the charts and are refusing to acknowledge it. https://twitter.com/MariahUkUpdates/status/1211119081744674816

I want Mariah to get a #1 the most iconic Xmas tune ever

As much as i would like the amazing Ellie having a well deserved 3rd number 1 single, that is never going to happen....For the last 2 weeks, the official charts predicted her single to enter the Top 5 with their early chart news...That never happened!! She even dropped from the Top 10 this week!! But i do hope either Ellie or Mariah will be number 1 this week...One can only dream!!

A

Amie

2

Mariah is gonna be #1

avatar

1

I do hope so!! As long as the "sausage" guy drops from his current number 1 position, i will be happy!!

For as happy as I am to see 'River' at #1 on today's update, I don't think it'll stay there when more streaming data is added.

So I'm almost certain 'Own It' will do it on Friday, although it's so disappointing that Mariah & Wham! looked to get blocked again only thanks to ACR!

At least LadBaby won't get a second week at the top though.

12 Christmas songs in the Top 20 even before Christmas Day itself! For me, literally... the more, the merrier! :)

Hi Piran!

I'm surprised to see "River" at #1 on the chart update, but I'm sure that maybe "Own It" will get there on Friday.
And agree, LadBaby won't get a second week at the top.
At least the christmas songs are getting high!

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sergej! :)

Yeah, 'River' has usually been a lot lower in the actual chart than in previous "First Look" updates & the next chart will probably be no different.

While LadBaby is definitely out of the race for #1 now, I don't think he'll fall as much as he did last year!

By the way, these are today's predictions for my next personal chart...

#1: The Chainsmokers ft blink-182 - P.S. I Hope You're Happy (+1) ^ [768]
#2: Gryffin ft Maia Wright - Body Back (=) v [754]
#3: Mike Williams ft Maia Wright - Wait For You (-2) v [680]
#4: Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (+2) ^ [553]
#5: Taylor Swift - Christmas Tree Farm (+2) ^ [505]
#6: Kelly Clarkson - Underneath The Tree (+2) ^ [483]
#7: Justin Caruso ft Hilda - Broken Hearts (-3) -- [420]
#8: Wham! - Last Christmas (+5) ^ [406]
#9: The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (+10) ^ [396]
#10: Stormzy - Superheroes (-5) v [385]

As you can see, we've got another close battle for #1! ;)

1

and it's blocking normal songs like Adore you, Dua Lipa Don't Start Now, these were tracks i wish they could earn a new peak

avatar

Piran

1

Don't worry, they'll all have a good chance to hit a new peak or re-peak the week after, especially the former! ;)

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

especially after her performance on the Voice it's aiming for a return to number 1 on my chart .I love Dua lipa so much she super talented i jUst never get tired of her voice super

avatar

Piran

1

The only problem is that 'Own It' is considerably above it for now in regards to non-festive songs, while 'Don't Start Now' only has three more weeks before it could hit ACR.

Oh yeah, she sounds incredible & 'Don't Start Now' deserves that #1! :D

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

oooh it's gonna be a great week after JB teasing new songs, Selena Gomez new album can't wait also my Normani teasing with music video I'm sure this Friday they might release especially JB & Normani

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, Selena Gomez has a new album out in January 10th, doesn't it?

Looks like we'll be starting the New Year with JB getting an unstoppable run at #1 then, as it's been ages since we've had solo music from him! :D

Echosmith are releasing their sophomore album on the same day that Selena Gomez drops 'Rare', so we'll see who can have the biggest takeover on my personal chart.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

Do you remember I said it's a hit that can endure even Own it it is a potential for number 1 spot too where as the former has endured in the top 10 for a while it's been blocked for at about 2 to 3 weeks by Dance monkey

avatar

Sergej Dordij

1

Great to see your predictions for next week!
Here are my predictions for my personal chart next week:
1. Oh Wonder - I Wish I Never Met You (=)
2. Chris Kamara - Here's To Christmas (+4)
3. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (+11)
4. Sam Feldt - Winter Wonderland (+3)
5. Mike Williams - Wait For You (feat. Maia Wright) (New)
6. Robbie Williams - Bad Sharon (feat. Tyson Fury) (+4)
7. Viki Gabor - Superhero (-4)
8. The Weeknd - Blinding Lights (-4)
9. Wham! - Last Christmas (+4)
10. Cesare Cremonini - Al Telefono (-2)

The christmas songs could rebound, Mariah Carey could gain high thanks to her video and one debut could enter my chart (thank you for the recommendation, I hope you are happy as much as I am!)
BTW, next week, I'm bringing the numbers back for my next prediction of my chart.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

Own it was helped by the album too I wonder when is Dua Lipa album coming out

avatar

Sergej Dordij

0

Do you think LadBaby could do it next year for the Christmas chart in 2020? I doubt it, I hope he ran out of ideas for songs about sausage rolls (LOL)!

avatar

Piran

1

Honestly, if he's been able to do it in back-to-back years, this is very much encouraging him to go for it again in 2020!

I like sausage rolls, but I don't like them being Christmas #1 every single year, haha. :P

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

2

Yah JB very true I hope he comes with a smash hit maybe it could debut nicely. As for Echosmith I hope they are new album will help Lonely Generation to debut in haven't give the track a chance to listen but it is been bubbling under my playlist.

avatar

Piran

1

There isn't an official release date yet, but I have a feeling it'll be around February.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

And Selena Gomez I liked her new coming back as for Look at her now I wonder why it was quick to drop off on other charts it is a great song I stream it almost every second. And she will battling to number 1 too

avatar

Piran

1

I love seeing 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' in the running for #1 with that massive climb to third place!

Of course, the highlight for me this week is 'Wait For You' being the highest debut of the week in the Top 5!

I knew this would be bigger than 'Body Back' for you based on what you said on Crown Note, but I didn't think it would get this far! :D

avatar

Piran

1

True, take Christmas songs out of the equation & 'Don't Start Now' would still be #2! :)

avatar

Piran

1

Again, I think it was just bad timing with Christmas songs, but also because 'Lose You To Love Me' was getting all the attention.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

anyway even if it doesn't reach number in 2020 is still a track a lot of people will be jamming & I will be jamming it's a kinda track to endure like New Rules. the producer for her music is absolutely amazing the sound is phenomenal

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

eish I am sure she was supposed to let people digest one single at a time

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, loads of artists are doing double releases at the moment, which seems to be a massive risk as while one might take off, the other usually flops.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

I am disappointed eish actually the song is still selling absolutely fair on digital sales since its release still in top 10 it is going to reach platinum within a short space

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, whether or not 'Don't Start Now' gets to #1 on the singles chart, 'Future Nostalgia' will almost certainly be a future #1 album! :D

I'm also really hoping for an Adele comeback at some point in 2020.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

very true it's had a suggestion i don't know what you think WhatsApp is more accessible easily why don't we open a group chat on WhatsApp and discuss more though it's still fine here but on whatsapp we could be more open I have a lot of discussion. I'm sure we have active members like you Coolocelot, also other guys what do you think?

avatar

Piran

1

It seems to be doing consistently well in all metrics, even being #1 on airplay for like the past month! ;)

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

2

Let's hope I wonder what she has because each album had its own story
#19 sounded teenage like
#21 starting to mature
#25 really matured
#30 **I'm sure maybe experience As a mother or grown up not sure lol

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

true very true.

avatar

Piran

1

Sadly, I don't see Echosmith doing anything much in the way of singles nor album sadly, but I don't mind too much as long as they keep putting out more bangers like 'Lonely Generation' or 'Shut Up & Kiss Me'! :D

avatar

Piran

1

I'm not even sure Adele's next album will even be called '30'! Apparently, she said that her naming her albums after her age was just a trilogy.

I agree with you regarding the content, but maybe since she went through a break-up lately, she'll no doubt bring that up too!

avatar

Piran

1

I actually don't have WhatsApp yet, but whenever I get it, that sounds like an awesome idea! ;)

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

Cool Kids still remind of when they started still one of my all time alternative songs actually their debut in the music scene was massive for me and " Bright "too

avatar

Piran

1

Literally every song they've released is amazing!

I could relate to 'Cool Kids' a lot, so I'm very happy that went Top 20 in both the UK & the US. ;)

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

yah we can get to know one another like not only disccussing charts but debate on songs underated but deserves recognition even talking of your opinion on certain artists. Honestly I'm feeling like the new Album chainsmokers keeps on improving their rhythms just moves me .The guys are supertalented

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

She came in at #10 on Artists of the decade in South Africa
#9 Shekhinah (only local in top #20)
#8 Lady Gaga
#7 Katy Perry
#6JB
#5 Beyonce
#4 Rogart
#3 Ed sheeran
#2 Taylor Swift
#1 Drake

avatar

Piran

1

Taylor Swift was the biggest female artist of the decade in SA?! You guys have amazing music taste. ;)

Not surprised in the slightest to see Drake at #1 overall though.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

Definitely everything with the song is perfect instrument mm nice vocals and the guitar ooh so powerful I never get tired of the song super talented young kids

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, that'd be cool, same with Ctown Note too! :D

Funny you should say, since I'm listening to 'Family' with Kygo right now, haha.

I love this album so much though! Shame that The Chainsmokers aren't getting the success they did two or three years back!

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, they're not even that old even now, but then remember that 'Cool Kids' came out over six years ago now! :O

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

very true i wonder why they so underrated I feel they have actually matured better the first album this year to give five star rating as for PS I Hope You Happy i feel like it's the father of "Takeaway .like part 2 of "You Owe Me "
cousin of Sick Boy lol
Family it's dope also

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

I knew you were going to be excited about it Taylor .to be honest when We are never ever getting back together came out i knew she was going to be massive she kept throwing hits like nobody's business "1989"still remains my favourite album from her .She's talented although her country side was not for me her pop side is phenomenal Piran she kills it

avatar

Piran

0

'1989' is definitely a modern pop classic as far as I'm aware! ;)

Her best album is still 'Fearless' for me though! Her country era was something truly stunning.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

avatar

Rob Parkinson

2

It is quite crazy when it's at no.2 on Amazon behind wham's last Christmas! I think own it will most likely be no.1 by Friday but as river is a xmas song I think it will most likely be higher than it has been previous weeks with Mariah and wham up there too

avatar

Piran

1

It's doing better than Mariah on Amazon Music?! Woah... so if its streams increase at the same rate as Mariah's & Wham!'s do, then it might be the highest charting Christmas song of 2019 after all! :O

avatar

Piran

1

You're welcome! You guys deserve it. :)

That's an amazing list, but why couldn't 21 Pilots be three places higher? Haha!

avatar

Piran

1

'You Owe Me' is alright, but it didn't get a lot of replay factor from me honestly.

'Takeaway' was a lot better, but yeah, I see the comparison a lot more too. I'm reminded a lot more of 'This Feeling' whenever I hear it! :D

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

in every song of chainsmokers there's a common sound in each track have you noticed even Zedd does the same there are few artists to mention that does the same

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

haha there were popular once time that album was well streamed I think they had stressed out former top 3 hit and did well on Radio charts

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

they could had more tracks then they would be higher

avatar

Piran

1

We're all on the current Hot 100 article now if you're staying on for much longer tonight! :D

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, Zedd's production is mostly a clock ticking though! :P

avatar

Piran

0

Was 'Stressed Out' or 'Heathens' the bigger hit in SA then?

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

0

I will be there for a short time I'm working tomorrow morning and on 25th too I have an early shift didn't have time to update my chart this week but between tomorrow *&Wednesday will update my last chart for the year
As for the Billboard Hot 100 not so much discussion even though people are discussing the success of Mariah Carey career. Do you think she will ever achieve another #1 hit I'm sure she has to retire soon

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

Stressed out was bigger and I feel it's still a song I can stream now .these guys took rock music on another level to be much recognised

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

even myself I would prefer the former

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

1

haha lol you analytical too when it comes to production
Ive chosen the decade end DJ artists
1 Sigala
this dude is super talented i love his production especially when he choose vocalists he's good his beats gets my heart. his discography is just rated 110%
2 Zedd is super cool and simple also good with production not fast beat but fits to pop/rnb just perfect and his discography 100%
3The Chainsmokers these guys has to be on my playlist everyday their production is unique and no one has it 95%
4.Calvin harris his hardworking never disappoints good with all kinds of production he just does it i wonder in America so underratedunless rihanna features lol
5.David Guetta a must in my playlist
6.Martin Garrix
7.

avatar

Piran

1

Haha, yeah, I tend to go into a lot of detail as you can tell from my OCC reviews! ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, the former was cool, along with 'Ride'! :D

'Heathens' was honestly rather unimpressive.

avatar

Brandon Mwinga

0

7 KYGO
8.Marshmello
9.DJ Snake
10.Jax Jones
11.Afrojack
12.Tiesto
13.Skrillex

I see on hot 100 this week so much change in top 10 by the end of this week Xmas will start to go to normal I hope when new artists releases on Friday will start 2020 with a bang
