Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud is the first song to hit 500 million streams on Spotify

The singer-songwriter notches up another record under his belt.

Ed Sheeran continues his record breaking year by hitting a new streaming milestone on Spotify today (October 12).

The singer-songwriter is officially the first act to reach 500 million streams with a song on the platform. The track in question? Thinking Out Loud, of course. 

And Thinking Out Loud isn't the only song by Ed the world is streaming in droves; some 19 million people listen to him on Spotify each month, with his songs having been played approximately 2.9 billion times and are included on 38 million playlists.

"Chuffed to hear that Thinking Out Loud has had half a billion plays on Spotify," Ed said. "Being the first artist to hit that milestone is amazing.

"Thanks to all the people who use this as a wedding song, soundtrack to a date and as a way to woo someone into a Netflix and Chill situation."

To celebrate the news, Spotify have also created The Sheerio Index, a heat map that displays his fandom by country. The map - which you can look at here - shows that Denmark listens to the most Ed Sheeran per Spotify user, followed by Norway, Singapore, Sweden and the UK rounding out the Top 5 respectively.
